No Speaker of the House, and no "reputable" candidate even wants the job. Donald Trump, Ben Carson, and Carly Fiorina, three novices who are woefully under-qualified to be president, are leading the entire field of nominees. Two "stars" of the Republican party, Rick Perry and Scott Walker dropped out of the running for the nomination months before Iowa. The former House Majority Whip is defeated in a primary election. Another former "star", Bob McDonell, is heading to prison.
No clear leader. No agenda that speaks to the American people. An oft-mocked, propaganda network posing as a news network is running the show. Losers of the popular vote in 3 of the last 4 presidential elections. Have to rely on gerrymandering, voter suppression, and low voter turnout in order to win elections. No women in leadership roles in the House. African Americans, Latinos, and Women pretty much hate them.
This is a party dying in front of our eyes.

(35,421 posts)They can remain in "control", but that's due to state and local election bullshit more than a real mandate from the people. Yet, as we can see, when they get control they cannot govern. They cannot even get themselves organized.

(40,656 posts)down. This is the end of them as a national party. They may keep things here and there, perhaps most of the south but as serious leadership, they're over.

(33,688 posts)and their propaganda networks prop it up, but relevancy to reality will be in short supply. Which is not to say that zombies can't do a lot of damage before they finally keel over.

(23,152 posts)How much damage will they do before the majority of Americans finally say, "fuck off, GOPpers, and take the horse your Gipper rode in on with you."? The carnage will be ugly, and the long-term consequences will be massive. I definitely will NOT miss the dinosaurs, but we'll be smelling their dying stench for decades.

(21,055 posts)They came back stronger and in a new form as the tea party and we know the havoc they have done to this country.
Hate, evil and ignorance will always be with us which is a characteristic of the base of the Republican Party.
I'd love to cheer their demise but it's not going to happen especially when our MSM or their media enable them.

(3,795 posts)The media will legitimize them and rehabilitate them whenever needed. WHENEVER needed.
The Democratic Party will prop them up instead of destroying them. MOST elected Democratic politicians fall all over themselves to strive towards being bipartisan with politicians that are cravenly corrupt and sociopathic. By not truly fighting the Republican Party (and they have TONS of ammunition), it allows for far too many Americans to conclude that both parties are corrupt. Hence low voter turnout. Hence Republican control of the House, Senate, and a large majority of state legislatures and governorships.
The Republican Party is absolutely pathetic (and has been for a very long time). And they control a large majority of federal and state government positions right now.
What does that say about our current Establishment Democratic politicians?

(33,688 posts)Without the media's ass-covering and legitimizing, the Repigs would have degenerated into something near a shooting war when the teatalitarians escaped their dungeon. But honest reporting in the M$M is as dead as the dodo.

It's part of what Warren means when she says "the system is rigged". The establishment power elite is in deep cahoots, with different brand names so people will root for "teams" instead of policies.

(23,671 posts)CNN ran a 10 minute segment this evening claiming Trump (with his large lead) is already planning an exit strategy.
The MSM has promoted him non stop for months, and now that the GOP itself is in trouble they would like nothing better than to push him aside for a party hack like Bush.

We're stuck with them forever, but can fend them off with bright candidates, good ideas, hard work, and lots of garlic.

(11,175 posts)As against that, the unpleasant reality is that there are more Republicans in the House than there have been in decades.
Overall, I'd say the GOP is in better shape than it was after the Goldwater debacle. Some people back then thought we were seeing the beginning of the end of the Republican Party.

No indication at all that the GOP won't still be the majority power in Congress yet again. They may be clowns, but they're clowns in charge. Wishful thinking won't change that.

(13,390 posts)In fact, MO may have been ground zero for a lot of this crap beginning in 2003 when republicans gained majorities in both chambers. What followed was chaos not unlike what we have seen in congress.
When term limits kicked in in MO, we had a new class with tons of first time reps. They were a lot like the tea partiers in their naivete and devil may care attitudes. They didn't "waste time" trying to get along with Democrats because they weren't invested enough in the job to gather allies.
In 2005, they lpassed Medicaid cuts that actually eliminated funding for optional services, including ambulatory oxygen. It was overturned in the SC. They passed a photo ID bill in 2006 that was also overturned. They went nuts with poison pills, and passing unconstitutional laws to gather symbolic votes to hold against Dems. ie Banning all picketing at military funerals, etc. We were one of the first states to pass a Marriage bigotry amendment in 2004.
They were also absolutely hateful. The difference between the the term limited GA has been so depressing.
It was so much like the tea party the first couple of years and has since settled into true red state governing. The important difference is term limits and the fact that republican spending on elections is out of control and dominated by Rex Singquefield.
In the house we have 163 districts with around 30,000 people in each. Thus there are far enough suburban and rural districts to overpower the small number of districts in the more progressive areas in the cities. Unfortunatel they have made inroads to bringing pieces of cities into surrounding rural districts and it has been very effective.
So, inexperienced legislators took over and made every effort they could to pass the most radical legislation possible. They repealed all campaign limits and having Rex Singquefield has put Dems at a funding disadvantage similar to that of our congress people. Sadly, republicans have expanded their majority and it has gotten worse.
With term limits, we have an endless stream of self interested fools (whose agenda was to make it as difficult as possible) looking for a line on their resume for a golden parachute lobbyist position.
Back when it first started there was gossip that there were national people behind it. I wonder if that was happening in other states?
So, on one hand, I worry that it could get worse. On the other hand, the fact that congress is not term limited gives me hope that the electorate will be sick of it enough that you are correct.
