Chaffetz, a surrogate for Mitt Romney's presidential campaign who is helping to lead an investigation into the attack, appeared to discuss that investigation on CNN's Starting Point with Soledad O'Brien. During the interview, Chaffetz echoed the right-wing media talking point that security was insufficient in Benghazi. But O'Brien pointed out the fundamental hypocrisy in this argument by noting that Chaffetz, like other Republicans in the House, voted to cut funding for embassy security.
O'Brien asked: "Is it true that you voted to cut the funding for embassy security?"
Chaffetz responded: "Absolutely. Look we have to make priorities and choices in this country."

Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-UT) criticizes the handling of Libyan consulate security despite voting to cut embassy funding.
Rep. Chaffetz says, I think what were going to hear is that we didnt meet the basic, minimum standards required for a facility such as the one we had in Benghazi. And the request for more security personnel went unheeded, unanswered, and consequently, you know, you have the death of four Americans. We [have to] make sure that that doesnt happen again in Libya. But we also [have to] make sure it doesnt happen in other places around the world . We (have to) get at the truth, but thus far its been a slippery attempt to try to get the truth because the White House and the Obama administrations been very slow in giving us the facts.
Later in the interview, CNN Anchor Soledad OBrien asks, Is it true that you voted to cut the funding for embassy security?
Chaffetz answers, Absolutely. Look we have to make priorities and choices in this country. We have 15,0000 contractors in Iraq. We have more than 6,000 contractors, a private army there, for President Obama, in Baghdad. And were talking about can we get two dozen or so people into Libya to help protect our forces. When youre in touch economic times, you have to make difficult choices. You have to prioritize things.
OBrien responds, Okay, so youre prioritizing. So, when there are complaints that, in fact, that there was not enough security, you just said, absolutely, that you cut, you were the one to vote against to increase security for the State Department, which would lead directly to Benghazi. That seems like youre saying you have a hand in the responsibility to this. The funding of the security? How am I wrong?

Why didnt you ask Bush about the 13 Benghazi's under his watch?
Why did you HATE the ambassador before you knew he existed?

"Yes, he and the people working for him asked for more security, some of those requests were approved, others were not. Were obviously looking to learn what more we could do," she said.

(49,947 posts)QUESTION: It has been suggested that budget cuts were responsible for a lack of security in Benghazi. And I'd like to ask Ms. Lamb, you made this decision personally. Was there any budget consideration and lack of budget which led you not to increase the number of people in the security force there?
DEPUTY ASSISTANT SECRETARY OF STATE CHARLENE LAMB: No, sir.
***
QUESTION: So there's not a budget problem. It's not you all don't have the money to do this?
LAMB: Sir, it's a volatile situation. We will move assets to cover that.
May 8, 2013 hearing:
QUESTION: Mr. Nordstrom, you were on that panel. Do you remember what she [Lamb] said?
REGIONAL SECURITY OFFICER ERIC NORDSTROM: Yes, she said that resources was not an issue. And I think I would also point to the ARB report, if I'm not mistaken, that they talked to our chief financial officer with D.S. [Diplomatic Security], who also said that resources were not an issue.
