What - in your estimation - are the chances of a government shutdown and/or default?

A default would be the worst economic disaster since the Great Depression; it might even be worse. Interest rates for home loans, student loans, etc. would spike. Millions could lose their life savings and pensions.

The credibility of the United States would be destroyed.

A government shutdown would be bad enough, and seems absolutely assured, especially with Paul Ryan as Speaker of the House.

They won't default for sure. The money is there for that. Shutting the government is happening after the veto today. Not sure why the president vetoed the budget. That would have stopped any shutdown right there.

There is a hard core of GOP conservatives and neocons and Tea Party types who have read only a dozen or so books, everything by Ayn Rand, and everything by Ann Coulter. They are not just willing to shut down the government, but eager to do so, champing at the bit. The smarter Republicans, the few who remain, are a little worried about today's Trey Gowdy circus, because they know how the voters are looking at it. They realize a shutdown would be throwing fuel on that fire. So, we may end up thanking Gowdy for scaring some of his fellow morons away from a shutdown. Imagine that! Trey Gowdy averts a shutdown.
