Baby Leo succumbs to illness after spending his life in NICU

Leo Frandsen, the Omaha baby who spent his first 10 months in a neonatal intensive care unit, died Thursday.

The story of Leo’s fight to grow so doctors could fit organs back into his body was published here Tuesday.

"Unfortunately Leo developed an infection, which led to sepsis and cardiac arrest on Wednesday," said Devn Frandsen, Leo's uncle. "He was resuscitated and placed on life support and ultimately passed away Thursday morning."

Leo was born in December, two months ahead of his due date, with gastroschisis, a condition in which his large and small intestines and liver developed outside his body. His abdominal wall was nearly nonexistent.
