Would this make you throw up in your mouth, or was it just me?
Posted by my sister who I love, but is a RWer... "I usually judge the success of my day by how much I get done. While I've been sick, it's been nice remember that all that I accomplish each day is an act of love and service to my family, but what gives me real worth is who I am as a child of God."
I usually gloss over her posts and don't care. That one just made me gag though. Am I alone? ![]()

2. Let it go. Lots of people like that stuff and get comfort from it.
She's not trying to push it on others, she's just expressing her own thoughts. Don't worry about it.

3. No, this is just ordinary Christian self-righteous glurge.
Getting an obviously expensive "vote for MEEEEEE" packet from Carson made me throw up a little in my mouth.
I'm a registered Democrat in a Democratic stronghold in a blue state, just who the fuck does he think he is? Bastard. |

8. I have no problem with it.
If that's what she believes, fine. I don't believe in gods, but I won't judge her lifestyle as long as she doesn't judge mine.

Absolutely makes me want to throw up in your mouth.
Someone mentioning their faith makes you want to throw up? |

13. Well thought out premise
I have faith too. I also was rubbed the wrong way when my sister says she is a child of god. We have the same parents, and our mother is going through very tough times in her old age. She was so devoted to us when we were young, she is now suffering dementia, and it really felt like it was a snub to our mother.
As I replied elsewhere, the whole "I am a servant to my family" thing also just didn't sit right with me. This is 2015, not 1520. Anyway, after you are done throwing up in my mouth, I will shit it right back out into yours. This level discourse is so enlightening. What else you got? |

20. You
You are a walking testament to the power of faith.
You might want to take a gander at what the term projection means and apply it to your life. You're welcome. |

10. I usually do have some pretty strong opinions when it comes to other people talking about religion,
but I find it pretty hard to be bothered by this. If believing in what she does helps her, good for her. She isn't judging anyone or trying to force her beliefs on anyone in that post. She is expressing what her belief means to her.

12. I understand
I understand your point... she isn't directly thumping people on the head, she isn't burning people alive, etc.
Look at it from a siblings perspective. We share the same parents. She is saying our parents aren't her parents. She is gods child... it rubbed me the wrong way. Also, the wording of the part "I am in service to my family" ... is more like a 16th century idea of a woman than a 21st century. And again, since this was personal, I seem to be taking it a bit more harsh than what the majority of DU responders feel. Well, I guess that is because its personal to me but not them. |

15. Is he helping out with your parents in a real, physical way?
Because then I would say she deserves to delude herself a bit. Otherwise, no. I get you.

16. She is not
She lives too far away to even make a visit for Thanksgiving or Christmas. The traffic is just too much, according to her story. It is a 5+ hour drive, but I make a 5 hour drive... just from a different direction :/

18. Well then she should STFU about family then. You really have to ignore that crap and accept...
some people are just miserable and selfish and their opinions do not matter. You can;t change them, you just have to accept they are on another planet and proceed accordingly. Sucks, I know.

17. I think all Christians consider themselves children of God and to say so isn't an attack
on their biological parents. They think their parents are also children of God. As you said, you know her personally. So you would know better than any of us what her feelings and thought may be.

11. Doesn't bother me at all.
We are all children of someone, and we all get to choose our own true parents.
I was blessed with quirky artistic, and to some degree, religiously insane parents. My heritage is Christian pacifist. I'm good with that. |

21. You are not alone. I find that sentiment unambiguously belittling.
what gives me real worth is who I am as a child of God. Fuck that. That mawkish platitude makes two clear statements:
1. "I have no inherent worth." 2. "People who aren't Children of God have no worth at all." It's dehumanizing on all levels. I've been told time and time again that statements of this sort are meant as positive, inspirational methods, and only an uptight jerk would take offense. Again, fuck that. As someone who hasn't swigged the Kool-Aid, I recognize declarations of religious dominance, in part because they are pervasive and obvious. When I point them out, I am often told that it must be nice not to have to worry about real problems, or that I should "get over it." Well, fuck that too. |
