The higher education community is aghast today at news that no one expected to hear: a dumb idiot in an unlikely position of power has proposed a stupid regressive anti-intellectual ideain Florida.
... Inside Higher Ed reports that the State College of Florida at Manatee-Sarasota, which last year became the only one of 28 Florida public colleges to do away with a tenure system for professors, now has an even brighter idea for academic excellence:
That was in September. Between then and now, Beruff was reportedly working on a second proposal that would ask potential college employees, including faculty members, to quote their fee for services on job applications. That information would then be used in the hiring decision.
As the noted philosopher of education John Dewey famously said, Every great advance in higher learning has issued from the imagination of a right-wing Florida home developer.

(14,230 posts)Get rid of college athletics. No giant stadium maintenance, no inflated coach salaries, no students-as-slaves. Go to college to learn, period. If you want to play football, go pro.
I DO NOT GIVE A FUCK which college's team of slave-athletes beat which other college's team of slave-athletes, and I cannot fathom why anyone else would, other than local pride. I see no reason to fund something that ephemeral and silly on the backs of students who sincerely want to learn.

(1,958 posts)earns enough to pay for all of the non-revenue sports, many from the women's athletic department. (Football and men's basketball and hockey pay their way, the others, not so much.)
Like it or not, college sports is a multi-billion dollar indistry and it is not going to go away.
I went to a lot of Division III football games in recent years. There are no scholarships, but good competition and school pride. (My nephew played in every single game of his college football career starting as a true creshman and started every game the last three years. So, I guess I'm biased.)
