Robocalls to cell phones...HANG UP now!

Dear Kali,

As soon as we heard that a provision buried deep in the budget would authorize robocalls to cell phones we jumped on it. People like you quickly sent tens of thousands of messages to the House as they were debating the bill.

Your message was clear: this is a terrible idea!

But this bad provision got pushed through Congress in a rush to avoid a debt default and government shutdown. Thankfully, a handful of Senators have already launched legislation -- the HANG UP Act -- to repeal this before it even takes effect.

Tell your Senators to cosponsor, and all lawmakers to support, the HANG UP Act!

Even with the clearest possible prohibition in place, we still get some unwanted robocalls to our cell phones. Right now, your stories are pouring in describing debt collector robocalls related to debts you don't owe and debtors you don't know. This problem could get a lot worse unless the HANG UP Act quickly passes.

A handful of Senators -- Senators Markey, McCaskill, Wyden and Menendez -- are already signed on as original cosponsors and they need support.

Tell your Senators to cosponsor the HANG UP Act and say "No" to robocalls to cell phones!

After you take action, check out our work to pressure the major phone companies to give us all free, effective robocall blocking.

We are going to have to get the tools to block robocalls ourselves, and we've already signed half a million people on to our petition to the phone companies. Our campaign has put this problem back into the spotlight, so we hope you will share it with friends and family.

Thanks for everything you do!

Sincerely,
Tim Marvin, EndRobocalls.org

I get this annoying one at work all the time that asks to update our free Google listing, though now it's concentrating on Apple Maps. I can't hang up on those things fast enough. Curse you robodialers!

If the number isn't on my contact list, I don't answer it.

I know it might have ticked off the President and the Joint Chiefs and Debbie Schultz a few times, when they've called me for advice, but I TOLD them: No entry, no answer. Sorry, guys -- you'll have to figure this one out yourselves.

I never pick up if I don't recognize the number. If it's actually something important, they'll leave voice mail.

If it's from a number I don't recognize, I don't answer.
