(24,524 posts)and I am glad he is speaking out and speaking up for Muslims. He may be frail these days, but he can still sting like a bee.
Thanks for the thread, Cha. We need to counter the bigots at every opportunity.

(296,868 posts)Goodness!
I know what you mean about countering the bigots.. I see graphics like this and I just want to post them. Not even looking for them.. they're just there.

(1,587 posts)Between this and another quote from the TV this morning, I was reminded about watching him fight back when he was still Cassius Clay. Awesome boxer, and awesome human being.

(73,510 posts)Good to see this being covered on DU and FB. (One of The Champ's daughters sent me some "family photos" from Thanksgiving; Ali appears to be doing well these days.)

(2,884 posts)I remember a Muslim cleric who stated that the Charlie Hebdo shootings in Paris were 'unislamic', but that the Charlie Hebdo drawings themselves were a more serious crime than the shooting.
In Islam, people who blaspheme are enemies of Islam, therefore NOT innocent.
It is stated as such in the Quran, and made perfectly explicit in the hadiths.
As for the Paris attacks of November, Sam Wood did a step-by-step analysis of how to theologically justify them from an islamic perspective: the bystanders paid taxes in France, financing the French Army which was attacking the ISIS 'caliphate' = enemies of Islam = NOT innocent.
So, Ali's sentence, well meaning as it is, carries little weight for literalist Muslims.
