I don't think the militia thought this takeover through at all

My guess is they had been reading too many right wing propaganda pieces that miss represented what was really going on with the rancher and why those lands were burned. They believed he was just burning off invasive species on his land and it got out of control which is flat out wrong. So they thought they would come into the county and be greeted as hero's. Instead, it sounds like the locals mostly want nothing to do with them and understand that the arson was committed to cover up poaching and cost the Gov. a shit load of money. It was a simple case with their own family members testifying against them.

So the cause they intended to rally around has fallen apart and they are now saying they want a shit load of federal land given to ranchers, not the Native American tribe that the Gov. had originally given the land back to. This will go NO WHERE! It's just fucking stupid as fuck! It provides no real leverage or lame reason for even Fox News to latch onto. It just comes across as a bunch of idiots without a cause. Hell, not even other militia groups around the West want to touch this.

I would advise the Gov. to wait them out, not give them the spotlight and eventually they will leave. Maybe allow a shit load more of them in but take away any food and supplies as they let them in. The more people there, the more mouths to feed then they should arrest them one by one as they leave.

With buildings that size and even with propane available the furnaces will not work.
The water pumps will not work either, cutting off the inside water.

They still have the rest of January and part of February to get through before it warms up.

Maybe play loud John Philip Sousa music all night. And/or maybe some gun shots and screaming sound effects, seeming coming from some of the other buildings.

A sniper would be at considerable risk from counter-snipers, and I'd be real surprised if they didn't have some long-range gear with them (and some decent shooters). And they have the cover of stone buildings...

I want these tools arrested, but I don't think it's worth putting others at risk to do it when we can just wait them out by interdicting any possibility of resupply (and make sure they have no way to communicate with the media...only with the authorities).

Another great chance for drone operators to practise. Drones can be used to keep them pinned down inside the building.

The license plates from every vehicle at that refuge would be a place to start changing titles to property.

First the pick-up trucks, cars and trailers,

then the homes and ranches from where they made phone calls and emails to participate in this nonsense

then seizing the bank accounts that made available money for food and ammo...

By the time Bundy gang surrendered they might not own anything but their dirty underwear, and a creditor might put a lien on that.

The majority of species winter elsewhere, and those that don't have a lot of land to choose from. But I suspect those turds will be surrounded in pretty short order, regardless. It's not very easy, right at this moment, to get forces in place: it's snowing all over the region, and it's a long way to any population center of any size. But I have no doubt there are lots of law enforcement resources trying to get there, probably including an FBI weapons team (it's federal land).

The place is literally lakeside, and there's a spring less than 1500 feet away.

I have no problem with waiting them out, even if that tales a long time. They're isolated (and thus no particular public threat), there's no way they can get away at this point, and I don't think it's worth it to risk lives actively assaulting the place. The news media will quickly get tired of covering something as boring as a siege, so they won't be getting the publicity they crave.

for the protection of the land and its inhabitants, as well as for the visitors to it.

without staff, there is no protection going on.

and with this going on, the visitors aren't allowed to use the refuge as intended.

in other words, the idea that no harm is happening is wrong.

The center is usually closed this time of year, though...no staff in place, to the best of my knowledge (I may be mistaken, of course). A big part of the refuge's usual population are migratory birds; they're elsewhere this time of year. Few people visit in the winter. This silly occupation isn't without some "harm" occurring, to be sure, but at this point it's quite minor. And I don't think these fools will hold out all the way into mid-Spring when conditions out there start to change rapidly.

Punks with guns. They've got nothing. Like you said they didn't think this through. Of course, since they're dumber than dirt, it would be impossible for them to think things through.

They've got their rifles and that's all they need. Dumbasses. If they go up against the military with rifles, they're toast.

They go up against any 100 guys that disagrees, with no rifles, they're toast. Their rifles are the only testosterone they have.

They might have checked with the Hammonds (the ranchers being sent back to prison because their arson sentences were apparently too short) before taking up their "cause." According to their lawyer, they will report back to prison as requested tomorrow.

Beyond that, they're making some kind of screwy argument against public lands overall -- somehow it should all be given over to private ownership, or something?

How would that even work?

who bought into all the antigovernment crap on their AM radios and now think that because they've managed to storm and occupy an unoccupied bird sanctuary it makes them badasses and qualifies them for martyrdom.

I think the concern at this point is to keep the property they're squatting in as undamaged as possible.

They've thought this through as much as the Tsarnaev brothers did, doing their worst and what they'd say to the adoring media but no idea of what they were actually standing for and certainly no exit plan.

Jihadist or YeeHawdist, most of them are dumb as doorknobs.

If they have sat phones have the service provider terminate service.

Establish a perimeter so nobody goes in and out, and wait then out.

As soon as you end any ability to communicate with the outside world they will all go crazy from boredom and not getting the attention they crave.
