Zsigmond's five-decade career included work on Deliverance, Blow Out, The Ghost and the Darkness and The Long Goodbye. He won an Academy Award for Close Encounters and was nominated for his work in The Deer Hunter, The River and The Black Dahlia.
More recently, Zsigmond shot a number of episodes of Mindy Kaling's sitcom The Mindy Project. In 2003, he was ranked among the 10 most influential cinematographers in film history in a survey by the International Cinematographers Guild.

I just heard his name mentioned on an American Dad rerun and I just rewatched Deliverance.
His work was very nice. It never called attention to itself, yet was always impeccable.

The script wasn't what I look for in science fiction, but the cinematography made the movie worth watching.
Extra points for Francois Truffaut.

(4,220 posts)6. He and Lazlo Kovacs filmed the Russians violently putting down the 1956 Hungarian uprising...
Using their film school equipment, they then smuggled the film (and themselves) out of the country. I think any film that we see of this event in documentaries was shot by these two greats.
