(13,856 posts)I thinks it was in Oregon, back in the 80s built a new student cafeteria and left it up to the student council to pick the name. They announced that it would be the George Donner Dining Facility before the administration caught on and invalidated the Council's role.

(803 posts)a dining facility at the University of Colorado, Boulder was named the Alferd G. Packer Memorial Grill. Packer admitted to committing cannibalism in 1874 while he and 5 other men were snow bound in the Rockies. He was later sentenced to 40 years for manslaughter.

(36,217 posts)In 1820, crewmen (Chris Hemsworth, Benjamin Walker, Cillian Murphy) aboard the New England vessel Essex face a harrowing battle for survival when a whale of mammoth size and strength attacks with force, crippling their ship and leaving them adrift in the ocean. Pushed to their limits and facing storms, starvation, panic and despair, the survivors must resort to the unthinkable to stay alive. Their incredible tale ultimately inspires author Herman Melville to write "Moby-Dick."
I haven't seen the film but read the book decades ago. Good read until the cannibalism began.

(36,217 posts)when all you had was saltwater saturated hardtack.
But speaking of mammoth: The mammoth irony was their decision to navigate in longboats against prevailing winds to the Americas, three times the distance from the closest land, the Marquesas, because they were convinced the islands were populated by cannibals.

(26,177 posts)I got a lot of fun background stuff. Like the lack of snow, when they filmed certain scenes so they had to use that fabric snow like you put under a christmas tree. In one scene if you watch closely, you see the "snow" get caught on one of the actor's heels and get dragged down the hillside.

Cannibal! The Musical (originally known as Alferd Packer: The Musical) is a 1993 American independent black comedy musical film directed, written, produced, co-scored by and starring Trey Parker while studying at the University of Colorado at Boulder, before reaching fame with South Park alongside his friend Matt Stone who also stars in and produced the film. It is loosely based on the true story of Alferd Packer and the sordid details of the trip from Utah to Colorado that left his five fellow travelers dead and partially eaten. Trey Parker (credited as Juan Schwartz) stars as Alferd Packer, with frequent collaborators Stone, Dian Bachar, and others playing the supporting roles.
In 2001, a stage production was staged Off-Broadway at the Kraine Theater on East 4th Street in New York. The show continued to find small theaters and audiences across America and beyond for many years.
A large-scale stage production was produced by The Rival Theatre Company at the 2008 Edinburgh Festival Fringe. It featured West End performers. It was executive produced by Jason McHugh and directed by Frazer Brown.[2]
In 2011, producer Jason McHugh released a book titled, "Shpadoinkle: The Making of Cannibal! The Musical," which chronicles all aspects of the creation and continuation of the Cannibal! The Musical cult phenomenon.
