Such inaction was likely to have consequences, predicted a July 2014 report by the Homeland Security's Office of Intelligence and Analysis.
The militants' belief that the standoff "was a defining victory over government oppression is galvanzing some individuals," the report said, linking several criminal acts -- including the murder of two Las Vegas police officers -- to those who helped at Bunkerville.
The report warned more violence and armed standoffs were likely -- especially against government officials and law enforcement.
"At end of day, the Bundys walked away with essentially a victory," said Eric Herzik, professor and chair of the University of Nevada-Reno's Political Science Department who closely followed the events in 2014.
"The Bundys, in particular," he said, "feel they're above the law,"
Cliven Bundy reclaimed the cattle at the center of the standoff. He continues to run them on federal land. He hasn't paid the $1 million in grazing fees that a judge has ordered him to pay to the Bureau of Land Management.
And last April, on the anniversary of the standoff, the Bundys held a weekend-long party at the Bunkerville ranch.

(58,785 posts)right wing is going to reconcile tax a weak, tax-starved federal government with the well controlled surveillance state so many actually want, but consistency has never been their strong suit.

(9,033 posts)but we didn't need Homeland Security to tell us that. Anybody could have predicted something like the Oregon clusterfuck after the Bundys got away with their BS stunt.
It would have been stupid and wrong to get into a fire fight with them at the time, but arresting those responsible later? Filing charges and freezing assets? WTH has the Justice Dept. been doing?
...so true..!!

(46,682 posts)Even in local areas across Central Florida they have rooted into the community, pushing their anti-government memes in small bite-size portions that generates public support for them. I mean, how stupid do you have to be to believe that any good can come from downsizing government regulations? Is the tax bonus you receive really worth the destruction of your own community as these people infiltrate government and community leadership positions to profit from the weakened regulations?
Apparently, very stupid because too many can't see through the ruse. And you can bet that their children will grow up not knowing any better.
Yes, the Feds created their own problem. Many of us have been trying to tell them that something was wrong in our communities, and they just took the easy route and looked the other way. If we have a problem with white Americans thinking they are above the law, who can blame them from reaching this conclusion because no one has shown them anything different.

(34,661 posts)Patriot and Militia Groups have used the local Political establishment as their spring board. At least that seems to be the end results hear in Nevada. The Bundy Clan is large and are interrelated to most of the City,County, and a couple State Representatives in Clark County. Their Politics is IAP(Independent American Party)which is just a Libertarian Tea Party sub group. The County Republican Parties have and are using these folks to harass any one who disagree with their ideals. The Genie is out of the bottel and they can't control them any more. Bunkerville gave these folks their fifteen minutes and they are running with it.
Noticed a couple of their distant relatives and supporters who are right wing Republicans, have announced they are not seeking reelection in order to spend more time with their families. BTW,the Rethugs won't worry about the Seat, the person will retire a couple of months early and the Republican County Chairman will appoint another clone.

(36,063 posts)I wouldn't be at all surprised if the US government paid for multiple studies and that some number of those white papers didn't argue the opposite.
If I were a HSA administrator I'd be out there trumpeting anything that looked close to almost correct.
Yes, of course, that isn't based on any evidence, just terrific distrust and skepticism about the security agencies.
When somebody is screaming I told you so, I told you so, as they say in Arkansas something ain't raiht.
