(60,010 posts)Back then, I missed out on much tv fare, but knew about it laster.
Now I have most of Vidal's writings and am catching up.
For some reason I vaguely remember seeing Buckley's face on tv more than Vidal's, but that is all I remember...seeing their faces.

(snip)
They sell us the president the same way
They sell us our clothes and our cars
They sell us every thing from youth to religion
The same time they sell us our wars
I want to know who the men in the shadows are
I want to hear somebody asking them why
They can be counted on to tell us who our enemies are
But they're never the ones to fight or to die
And there are lives in the balance
There are people under fire
There are children at the cannons
And there is blood on the wire

(918 posts)commercial posters and the Chinese made printed ads around 400 BC.
Wall paintings (billboards) touting political candidates were found in the ruins of Pompeii.
The Chinese also created advertising jingles played by street musicians to sell candy as early as 1100 BC.
So no, advertising is NOT America's only artistic invention.
I vote for Jazz even though, like every art form, it evolved from a number of musical forms that found their way here from other parts of the world.
