Is This the Collapse of the Kardashian Economy?

Magazine covers featuring members of the Kardashian family lead to fewer sales. Viewing figures are down for their E! show. Yet still the clicks and column-inches keep coming…

In a report for Women’s Wear Daily, the journalist Alexandra Steigrad, analyzing figures supplied by the Alliance for Audited Media, found that when the Kardashians appeared on a magazine’s cover, sales of that magazine were lower than normal.

For example, for the first half of 2015, Cosmopolitan’s single-copy sales were around 531,086. However, the Kylie Jenner issue sold fewer—495,423—while the November issue, proclaiming the Kardashians (pictured en masse on the cover) “America’s First Family,” sold even fewer at 436,500 copies.

Meanwhile, Glamour’s first half of 2015 average—193,108—was slightly torpedoed by its July cover of Kim Kardashian (164,918). When Kendall Jenner appeared on GQ’s cover in May, the sales of the magazine—83,202—were about 10,000 down on the usual.

The negative pattern wasn’t uniform: Rolling Stone and Women’s Health magazines both got lifts in audiences from covers featuring Kim and Khloé Kardashian respectively.

And the cynical wonder: how much dough-re-mi have members of the Kardashian Empire stashed away to sustain themselves in the long dark hereafter of oblivion.

I wouldn't count on her picking up any slack.

They are the most overexposed "celebrities" of all time. I would be happy to see them go.

It may be irrational of me to care but it really bugs me that, with so much else worth talking about in the world, so many people are fascinated by this family. (Actually, some of them, I think Kourtney, Khloe, and Kendall, seem like decent human beings, although no more so than the average person. The mother is horrific and Kim is just a black hole of narcissism.)

They have no actual talent to rub together between them. Fame is fine, but it should go to people who actually have done something to deserve it.

Edited to add that the only reason I know their names is that there's a teenager in the house who watches that stupid show in a room without doors, so I can't get away from it.
