Oregon standoff tension mounts as so-called '3%' groups refuse to leave

Sam Levin in Burns, Oregon
Sunday 10 January 2016 22.22 GMT

The heavily armed rightwing groups who descended on rural Harney County in eastern Oregon on Saturday – to protect the peace, they said – made clear they had no intention of leaving, as the occupation of the Malheur national wildlife refuge entered its second week.

Observers, meanwhile, noted that many such groups were extremist entities with histories of promoting bigotry, racism and violence.

On Saturday, leaders of the militia group, which began its occupation a week previously, said the outside groups were unwelcome and unnecessary.

A day later, the new militias in town said they would stay until the occupation ended, raising further concerns about the potential for violence.

The leaders of the outside groups insist that they aim to act as mediators between the occupiers of the federal buildings, law enforcement and local residents – and say they will provide protection and security for all. They say they do not endorse the armed takeover of the refuge, by occupation leader Ammon Bundy, and want to ensure it does not end with a deadly shootout.

best things people can do, if they have warm enough duds and some sturdy boots.

I'm guessing there were many local folks who liked being in those woods in winter. With the Bundys and their ilk occupying those buildings, that winter hiking connection is deferred.

The impulse of a handful of people to enjoy a winter hike seems much more important to me than whatever seditionist bullshit the "militia" is promoting.

Just look at the satellite view on Google Maps and you just won't see a lot of trees in that area. There are a few right around the main buildings for the refuge and scattered trees in other areas but no woods.

There are only around 7000 people in the entire county. It's one of the largest counties in the U.S. 75% of the county is owned by the Federal Government. That 75% gives hikers 7500 square miles to hike on. This is not a "city park" when talking about size.

This is a pretty remote area. If you think local folks are lining up wanting to get in here to use the land then maybe you shouldn't. It would be pretty easy to drive oh maybe a mile or 30 and still be able to find a spot to pull off and go for a hike on Federal land.

Not saying it makes this standoff thing "right", but I'm sure there are hardly any "locals" that are pissed about not being able to access the land at the standoff location.

Oh, and this "county" is about the size of Hawaii. The land mass that is owned by the Federal Government (around 7500 sq miles) is about the size of New Jersey.

That also was the first mention of them trying to locate Brian 'Booda' Cavalier after he'd been gone from the compound for several hours. It was just after the Daily Mail confronted him about lying about having served as a combat Marine in Iraq and Afghanistan. I wondered if he split for good before the Daily Mail story came out. Sure enough, Raw Story had just put up a story confirming that. Booda, aka 'Fluffy Unicorn,' rabbited before his buddies found out he was a phony vet. And he was their head of security and personal bodyguard to Ammon!

About that paranoia...Raw Story's report noted: "Some of the militants also suspect Cavalier might be working as a federal informant."

Each silly subsequent "militia" group of whiney "patriots" are going to hitch up their pants higher to out do their stupid predecessors on this bird sanctuary.

Since they can come and go unmolested and without any ramifications, this will be the "Burning Man" of dumb ass whiney "survival" grifters - each "survivalist" bringing their long guns and "long winter siege provisions" like a 6 pack of ramen noodles. "Did anyone bring a pot to boil these noodles in?"

Thank god there's the tax payer funded potable water and there's the tax payer funded energy to power this free stove and heat their occupied buildings, but screw the government. FREEDOM!

to these armed angry yahoos that if they want to be more highly regarded as citizens than they currently are, they might return to their homes, be loyal friends to their friends and loving member of their family and extended family.

Instead they're threatening federal law enforcement officials and asking for people to send them snacks.

What I was going to say about the pot belly posse was that in their defense they looked very well organized. Not.

After seeing the book on Amazon that Mr. Tent guy wrote, it appears some in this group have a doomsday vision or something. I haven't had time to look into it. I think they're still there because if, for example, you were to put police uniforms on any of those guys, it would look totally natural. Wink wink.

It would be nice to graduate from aggressive behavior.
