(8,421 posts)I still have my magnet and David pin from the show. My spouse didn't get it, but I loved it. The designers of the show made it so you , wearing head phones, would here the song David was singing while it the costume in front of you. It was real WOW from that perspective.

Here is a little-remembered song which happens to be one of my favourite early Bowie songs, just him and a guitar.

Thanks.

(5,141 posts)Im really in mourning today. I had my hair cut like his when I was 9 and very proudly wore Bowie t-shirts through my adolescence. His influence empowered me to do whatever I wanted, look any way I wanted to look, and be exactly who I am, unapologetically.
Im hoping the Starman just went back to where he came from.
There's a starman waiting in the sky
He'd like to come and meet us
But he thinks he'd blow our minds
There's a starman waiting in the sky
He's told us not to blow it
'Cause he knows it's all worthwhile
He told me
Let the children lose it
Let the children use it
Let all the children boogie (I love how he sings booogay)

(34,095 posts)his music moved the world in so many ways.
I had one experience with the great one. Sometime in the early 70's, the Ziggy Stardust tour most likely but I will be darned if I actually can remember, I was out in Kansas City with some friends. I don't know what we were doing, probably just going places and hitting bars for fun but we happened to be in Crown Center. I was just blasted silly by that time, the place was roiling with people but I have no idea why we were there. I walked around the corner and slammed right into the Glitter King. I looked up and he smiled and went on. My friends were standing there, or sort of standing there, staring and we all laughed and went on. He had a huge entourage but back then nobody really worried much I guess because he was out in front and they were behind, people were all over the place but nobody said a word.
I am so very sad about this this morning. Tears came when I read this. He was and will remain one of the greats. His influence was important in many ways and I did enjoy him and all his stages.

(21,046 posts)And I wasn't even that big of a fan. I really liked his 2000 album REALITY. And I heard the hit singles, but didn't collect his stuff.
I admired him for being different. His favorite song of mine was This is Not America, which he wrote with Pat Metheny (my fave guitarist) and Lyle Mays for the movie The Falcon and the Snowman.

Bowie certainly had many other different styles to his music from time to time. He was definitely one of our most creative musicians in our time. He shall be sorely missed.

(19,537 posts)who just died a couple of days after I visited her on Thanksgiving less than a couple of months ago, and not long after her 89th birthday the weekend before then too. Bowie's death reminds me how so many special to us can leave us at any time unexpectedly, right after we enjoyed their life the day before. Bowie's influence over our lives will become more and more obvious in the days to come where we see the many different ways he's influenced our world in a positive way.

(2,062 posts)I remember when I was a kid, playing Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars, my old fashioned father would scream for me to "shut that shit off"....hahaha he hated Bowie, he actually didn't like Lennon that much either, but..... until one day when we happened to be driving, and a new song came on the radio, and he just flipped over it.... So China Girl became one of his favorites at the time... He asked who is singing this....I'm like oh great what another Bowie cutdown.... I almost peed myself when he said no this is great.....I told him it was Bowie, and he didn't even flinch, actually thinking he didn't ever remember Ziggy Stardust......hahaha.
Interestingly enough, although I did like David Bowie, I am and have been drawn to Kurt Cobain's version of Man who Sold the World since MTV Unplugged showed it......

(27,985 posts)I haven't seen a single snark or diss. That's a universality that is pretty unusual.
It's odd, but three days ago I was looking in the mirror at my blown pupils (it's a little bizarre but I'm used to it) and David Bowie came to mind with his two different colored eyes, one of which had a blown pupil. Reading the posts here, it seems that I had that thought on his birthday.
Sadly, when I took my break at work last night, I saw the sad news.

(14,164 posts)I remember seeing him back in the 80's in Vancouver. An incredible line up in that concert. Flaming Lips, Peter Gabriel, and David Bowie! Our group was short one ticket and had to buy one from a scalper. I'll always remember...I mentioned something to the male scalper about saving one of the ticket for himself, and he said "Oh no, I'd never go see Bowie, he's a fag!" Some people deny themselves to witness such creative genius over such petty ugly bias. He rocked that night and I'll always be happy to say I saw him perform live.
And he wasn't afraid to get political. Here is a song that may make my American friends uncomfortable, but when it came out, I speak for most all non-Americans across the world, this resonated with us during that last part of the Bush regime. Its not the official video which was a little lame. (Trent Reznor chasing Bowie around the streets). This is what we, in the rest of the world, saw in our heads when we heard this song:

(23,059 posts)I'm sad that he died after a long bout of cancer, but this one isn't tearing me up like the deaths of Duane Allman, Stevie Ray Vaughn and the Lynnerd Skynnerd (sp?) folks because they were in the prime of their lives and their careers and so much beautiful music was lost. So glad we have quite a lot of music from Bowie to treasure.

(11,945 posts)He prayed, in the depths of his addictions and lacerating questions: Lord, I kneel and offer you my word on a wing / And Im trying hard to fit among your scheme of things.
But Bowies quest was unfinished and it did not cease to torment him, while always enriching his art. In those days he himself told us he wore for many years a small silver crucifix. His was a search, a questioning, that went to a greater height and plumbed a deeper mystery than any answers or responses were able to reach.
It was mildly surprising to see a prominent Catholic Church official speak so warmly of a rock star. But it was fitting: Speaking well of the deceased is what decent people do.
But then the ratty ones started putting him down.
