<snip>
Subtropical Storm Alex has formed in the eastern Atlantic Ocean, giving the 2016 hurricane season a rare January start. The Atlantic hurricane season officially runs from June 1 through Nov. 30, but storms have, on an occasional basis, formed before and after that date.

Subtropical Storm Alex was located about 785 miles south-southwest of the Azores as of Wednesday afternoon, which is a group of islands located 800-900 miles west of Portugal. Alex has a large wind field with maximum sustained winds estimated to be 50 mph

Global Warming/Climate Change does not seem to affect the weirdness of the hurricane cycles. After 2004, everyone predicted that Florida would be obliterated by hurricanes fed by rising sea temperatures. Florida hasn't seen a hurricane since Wilma in 2005. While i agree that the earth is getting warmer, every unexpected climatic phenomenon cannot be linked automatically to GW/CC.

Jeff Masters has an interesting piece on both the Central Pacific TS and this one. Two such storms are a first.
