Republican: "You can't call us out by quoting the Bible. We own Christianity."

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/dave-brat-conservatives-own-the-bible_5697536fe4b0ce4964234b53
http://www.rightwingwatch.org/content/goper-dave-brat-attacks-obama-citing-bible-says-right-owns-tradition-christian-love

... in which Brat expressed his anger that Obama cited Christian teachings when he criticized Republicans for their attempts to block the resettlement of Syrian refugees in the U.S.

The president, Brat said, “is using the Christian tradition and trying to bring about compassion by bonking Republicans over the head with the Bible. It’s almost a comedy routine on what compassion and love is. He’s mocking his enemies in order to compel a larger federal state using the tradition of love.”

He said that the conservative movement “needs to reeducate its people that we own the entire tradition” of Christian love, because liberal professors “have rejected natural law” and religious ideas.

---------

1. You obviously aren't allowed to make an argument from the Bible unless you are a Republican.

2. You obviously aren't allowed to mention that Jesus commanded us to care for the weak. Only the GOP gets to lecture people about christian love and why christian love calls for a smaller federal government.

3. Maybe this "good Christian" should actually read the Bible. There are no natural laws in the Bible. Such a concept does not exist in Christianity. There is only God's will. The concept of laws of nature was invented in the 13th Century by the esoteric Ramon Llull.

I can tell you that they don't actually read the Bible. They go by what their pastors tell them is in the book. They pick and choose parts, paraphrase and reword it until it fits whatever meme is deemed acceptable. They also mainly look to the Old Testament, which I was taught in Sunday school was the book Jews lived by, but that Christians had abandoned to follow the Messiah's teachings.

I had many a discussion with my then-husband about the crap he came home and spouted off to me, daring him to show me where it said that in the Bible. He could not. I could go to the chapter/verse and show him it was in fact exactly the opposite meaning than what his pastor had spent hours/days/weeks lying to him about the "Good Word".

Considering that every bit of that mess reputed to be God's word was stolen from all the pagan religions that had gone before it, I don't see why anyone has any use for it at all. Don't even think about all this supposed "God's word" crap got left out over the centuries. If it's the sky man's own words, why wasn't it deemed good enough to be in the book? Maybe because it didn't support those who were even then using this "new" religion to control people for the benefit of the leaders?

This is rank idolatry for any theists. That means one is putting themselves in the place of G-d and not recognizing that they are creatures and not the creator. In a sense bibliolaters are really closet atheists who just wish to use the Bible as a weapon. There ilk is to be found in the radicalized Imans who do the same with the Quran.

I can't tell you how many right-wing fuckwits I have torn apart in religious arguments because, unlike them, I have actually READ and studied the book they profess to know so much about... multiple times.

My wife is another bleeding heart liberal who was raised in the Bible Belt and spent much more than her share of time in church or religious classes well into adulthood. She would DESTROY this clown in a religious debate. She would reduce him to choked sobbing.

I would love to see John Fugelsang get in a forum with this asshole. He's particularly good at this because his parents were in the church, and he even went to the seminary for a while, as I recall.

To them, religion is a dog-eat-dog, kill-or-be-killed concept.

To liberal religious (and non-religious) types life is more about plowshares than swords and how to we learn to get along despite our differences rather than fighting or isolating each other.

And for that you can blame the namby pamby "liberal Christians", what few are left that is, who sat quivering in their pews afraid to object when the hateful fundies started speaking for Jeebus in the 70s. Nobody who remembered the nicer bits of the NT thought it was worth the time and money and effort, that the far right poured in huge waves to tell us all who Gawd hates, so that they might mention whom he supposedly loves. I know they think the meek will inherit the earth but they are doing a piss poor impression of inheriting anything in secular politics. While we still have secular politics.

I remember I asked God to leave Christianity to me when the time came because I thought I'd be able to take care of it pretty well, but darn it, you know Him, he just forgot to add it to the will. So, how much are you asking for it?

"We bought Christianity!" Really? Did you buy God - is God your Slave, now?

Hmmm...I think there a significant story about their God Jesus in the Temple, and something about vendors and tables maintained by buddies of the priests where money was being changed and choice "sacrifices" bought by hypocrites who just wanted to be able to show how rich and powerful they were to the people who really did sacrifice something they otherwise needed?
