Please think good thoughts for the kitten Tara who is at the vet's...

I took her and Gabe, the lynx point, in this morning to get fixed and I had noticed she wasn't gaining weight like her brothers, even though she has been eating ok. Sure enough, she's lost a few ounces in the last month, not much, but she should be gaining. Temp was normal, and she'll get tested for HIV and leukemia today also. She's big enough to fix, it's not like she's wasting away, but there is something going on. The vet checked her mouth and it looks like she has the start of something I can't pronounce, which is basically an inflammation in the back of her mouth. It can be managed with antibiotics, although eventually she may lose her teeth. I'm thinking even though I see her eat wet in the morning and at night when I'm home, she doesn't eat the dry during the day like the others because the hardness bothers her and she should be eating constantly at her age.

Their brother Brent pitched such a fit about going into the carrier I decided to take him in alone next week. I'll have to trick him somehow. Tara walked right into the carrier, Gabe went into the bathroom so I closed the door and then put him in the carrier there. Brent then knew what was coming and scattered.

4. Was it stomatitis?

I trapped a little female feral a few years ago in my back yard. She showed up all by herself, only a few months old, way too small and with what looked like an eye infection. She bonded with an adult male feral in my yard who kind of looked after her.

After a few weeks I was able to trap her. I took her to the vet and, besides the eye infection, she also had a severe case of stomatitis, so bad that the vet was amazed that she was eating at all. She ate both kibble and wet food. The vet said there was no hope of saving her and we had to put her down. I suspect that her mother knew she was sick and booted her from the litter, poor little thing.

Glad you were able to get Tara to the vet before her condition became worse. Wishing the best to her. She is beautiful!

10. UPDATE: Spoke to the vet, out of surgery and doing fine...negative

for both on leukemia and AIDS...hopefully I can start getting weight back again on Tara.

I might try poaching a little chicken and mincing it up and putting her by herself with a plate of it. One of my cats was quite sickly when I got him from the shelter as a kitten and I hand fed him little treats throughout the day until his appetite finally kicked in. I hope she'll be okay. (Ever thought of taking your bathroom as a charitable deduction on your taxes? LOL.)

18. That was the plan last night...

She would not stay in the bathroom because she wanted to explore the whole place to make sure she was back home. So I stood over her as they ate...she had quite a bit, and then this morning. She does eat, but I want her to eat more. Thanks.
