General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI just contacted my Oregon federal representatives
Ron Wyden, Jeff Merkley, and Pete DeFazio and told them get the FBI and other law enforcement officers to get up off their collective asses and get these armed idiots out of the Malheur NWR. I've had it. They commit daily felonies, come and go as they please, get others to join in, get food, and still have lights and power. Sorry, this is bullshit.
We need to cut access, cut off water, cut power, and generally starve the jerks out.
Meanwhile a peaceful protester in New York gets six months in jail.
Are we a country of laws, or not?
End of Rant. Thank you for your patience.

(45,319 posts)"I believe that this illegal occupation, this destruction of federal property was directly emboldened by the fact that their father of the two leaders, Cliven Bundy, stood down the government two years ago when he owed a million dollars other ranchers paid their grazing fees, he refuses to do it. And he was grazing in areas that were prohibited .And he stood down the government at the point of a gun, and hes still grazing and nobody, nobody at the Justice Department has seen fit to raise a finger against him.
He celebrated the anniversary of the takeover and said this is how its done. And now his sons are replicating that in my state of Oregon, where we abide by the laws. Yeah, we disagree over a lot of federal policies, but we abide by the laws.
Its time for the Justice Department to take some action. Wake up down there!

(3,919 posts)for all three of them. jeff merkeley responded today. his response was (form letter) similar to his posting on fb a few days ago - assuring he is keeping a close watch on the situation. i take this to mean he is letting persons of influence know his constituency are very concerned. he thanked me for my concern.
defazio sent a letter last week appraising his constituency of his attention and concern regarding the occupation.
have not heard from wyden. he represents the next county over.
next, the governor - not that she seems to be able to do much of anything regarding a federal issue, although, i would think the citizens in burns would be of concern to her.

(14,084 posts)but ok. I retired with 23 years in Federal law enforcement. Is that good enough for you? It offends me because these lands belong to all of us. They are fundamental to who we are. As liberals. we believe that government has a role to play in our lives, and one of these roles is being a steward of our environment, including protecting sensitive areas such as this. And yes, my sensibilities regarding law and order have been offended. I sincerely tried to be fair during my career, and I have always been offended by injustice, more so now than ever, and more so because I had first hand experience seeing injustice in the system. Good enough for you? Now, go ahead and alert.

(113,074 posts)destroying indigenous artifacts, and acting like masters of the universe? how far does our "patience" have to extend? we aren't starving them out, we aren't cutting off access, they are free to come and go, and ride roughshod over everyone. is this all okay with you, because "patience will win out"?? patience got us exactly nowhere with the father of the thugs in charge, as you may remember. patience got us this rerun.

(1,232 posts)of perceived value. Is that worth more than human life? You seriously want law enforcement officials to risk their lives and spend millions of your tax dollars amid bloodshed and violence over a parcel of land and a pile of stuff?
That makes no sense.
Yeah it's ok with me for these yahoos to make themselves out to be total asses. They have no significant support by anyone of relevence. They're becoming more of a joke every single day as the criminal charges rack up higher and higher. Sadly it will cost many millions to prosecute and incarcerate them. That's the only thing that pisses me off. I'm genuinely hoping that they just shoot each other and save us all the trouble. Give them enough time and they will do that, and I'm ok with that.
Violence isn't the answer and will only cause more problems. Revenge fantasies are silly.

(1,232 posts)although their ignorance and disregard for the historical significance is troubling but not surprising in their willful denial of the rule of law.
What strikes me most ironic though, is that they claim "We also recognize that the Native Americans had the claim to the land, but they lost that claim," clearly oblivious to the fact that he and his band of hoodlums lost their claim to the land too and a lot more recently.
The prosecution of these thugs under the various protections acts will only further bankrupt and add more jail time to the long, long sentences these guys are racking up. While it won't undo the damage, it continues to build the cases against them.
Seems to me it would be a marvelous thing to ultimately return the lands to the control of the various Native Americans factions, which would further stymie any additional actions by these land resource thieves.
I would love to see more active statements coming from the various Native American factions and it's a shame they aren't using this scenario to draw attention to their historical preservation issues, for benefit of course. But then, Americans aren't real big on cultural and historical preservation I guess.

(5,624 posts)drained out. Even if the pipes do freeze, the cost of replacing the water lines in minimal compared to the cost of letting the occupation continue. It's costing the county tens of thousands of dollars per day. In addition to the pile of money the feds have spent in relocating the employees of the refuge, and paying those salaried employees who can't work because of the occupation.
