http://www.advocate.com/religion/2016/1/19/head-russian-orthodox-church-blames-gays-rise-isisKirill claims that "many honest people" are joining the terrorist group ISIS to go fight in Syria because they are upset with the rise of LGBT rights. He says they are joining for "truly religious reasons," according to an English translation posted online by a Russian LGBT organization.
You become a fighter for the Caliphate. So whats a Caliphate?" he said in the interview. It is a society centered around faith and God where people follow religious laws. You are creating a civilization that is new by comparison to the established one that is godless, secular and even radical in its secularism....
The Russian Orthodox Church has supported the country's 2013 law to ban "gay propaganda" and other draconian measures that haven't passed. Even after international outcry over the law, lawmakers and police cracked down on LGBT activists. The country has a history of ignoring or even condoning violence against LGBT people with the blessing of the church.
Putin/RT crew, you got some 'splainin' to do!

Has ISIS made a big deal about Gay rights?
I mean sure, it is inevitable they hate Gay folks, but I dont recall it being part of their stated agenda.

(6,383 posts)This is the church that severely oppressed the sectarian movements such as the Dukabors, Subotniks, etc. created false stories about other religions (Khlysti) in the 19th century....until the Soviets took over who were equal opportunity oppressors.
Plus with oppression of the Greek Orthodox Patriarch by Turkey....the Patriarch of the "Third Rome" has gradually assumed more influence....wouldn't be surprised they title of "first among equals" moves from Istanbul (Constantinople) to Moscow.

(6,383 posts)A number of the Sects had small groups move out of Russia. The Subotniki, Molokans (both branches)...even heard rumor of Khlysti moved to the USA. The Subotniki didn't survive long in the USA. There was also a group of them that moved to Israel, but eventually were absorbed into the Jewish faith.
Interestingly, many of the Sects (including those that didn't branch outside of Russian Empire) still survive. However, after the Soviet break up, due to the anti-Russian sentiments in some nations, many of them moved to either Armenia or Russia mostly. The rest have joined their "colonies" abroad.

(6,383 posts)...they have influence on the government (something our resident Putin hater Uhnope fails to understand) vs. control. But a lot of the right wing policies are being driven by them...having the backing of the Orthodox Church = Political longevity.

(53,915 posts)OK, not really. It is amazing how a marginalized people, hated by the Russian government, is behind the creation of a virulently homophobic group, ISIS.
