If political representation were as important as the Oscars

I live in a small Blue pocket within a totally Red state. Both federal Senators and almost all of the statewide offices except for a few state reps and state senators are wingnuts. By population the wingnuts are less than half and are shrinking, but this small group controls everything.

What if political representation in were as important as the Academy Awards? There is a flap going on about none of the nominees this year being Black or other minorities.

Here’s what Whoopi said:

“ 'I’m not going to boycott, but I’m going to continue to bitch as I have all year round because I’m tired of seeing movies where no one is represented except a bit of the population ,” she said, encouraging viewers to boycott non-representative films instead of award shows."

She’s a member of a discriminated-against group, so there is NO doubt she knows how it feels in the largest ways (more than the Oscars), but think how the local apartheid wingnuts don’t get it (or rather DO get it) that the rest of us in this Red state are NOT REPRESENTED politically, that ONLY A BIT OF THE POPULATION is represented.

One of the causes is our own fault, voter apathy. But there is also some Stockholm Syndrome involved through generations of cultural conditioning of being submissive to the wingnut overlords, the “BIT OF THE POPULATION” that DOES vote and otherwise imposes its will that way and by aggressive techniques, like Gerrymandering and suppression.
