A YUGE number of conservatives just shredded Donald Trump in the National Review
Donald Trump must be stopped: That's the theme binding an avalanche of essays by conservative thought leaders 22 in all that the National Review sent thundering down the political mountain onto GOP voters late Thursday, along with an editorial by the magazine's editors.
With a massive winter storm expected along the East Coast this weekend, perhaps some of the 35 percent of Republicans who support the real estate mogul-reality TV star will be buried in actual snow, with nothing better to do than read all 9,000 words and change their minds.
Or perhaps they will dismiss "Against Trump" the title of this special collection by one of the nation's preeminent conservative publications as just another chorus of naysaying from the loathsome, out-of-touch "establishment." (The National Review did just get dropped as a debate sponsor by the Republican National Committee, however, which might help the magazine appear less establishment-y.)

(37,152 posts)Buckley and those around him considered Eisenhower a traitor to their "principles" for accepting the basic framework of the New Deal. Redefining conservativism in their own vision, wresting it away from Eisenhower and purging the Rockefeller Republicans was their entire reason for being.

(6,440 posts)Actually, NR has long been the go-to publication for the Trump base. They booted out John Derbyshire when he started openly describing himself as a white supremacist, instead of wrapping it up in the usual dog whistles, but it's still the magazine of choice for birthers and climate change deniers looking to confer some spurious intellectual respectability on their ravings.

In fact they have been paramount importance to conservatism since the 70s. (as chronicled in The National Review, current publisher of PNAC and The Chicago School.) They're not going to let Trump spoil all that.

(1,098 posts)These 'conservative thought leaders' (excuse me while I go laugh at that concept for the next five minutes ) have been pumping out the hate for decades now. They've deliberately been pushing to dumb down the intelligence of the political discourse on the right, to make it easier to spoon feed Republican voters false and downright idiotic information. They've been telling white voters that communists and brown people and gay people are to blame for all the problems in the world.
Trump's popularity is a product of all this. Whenever he says something outrageous that disgusts normal people, his poll numbers climb higher and higher.
It's hilarious. The Republican establishment has been grooming idiot conservatives for a candidate like Trump for the longest time, but now that the establishment realizes they have no control over the situation, they're turning on Trump.

(930 posts)And we're supposed to take them and their magazine seriously? Why?
Of course, they deserve Donnie.
But are they grateful to him for reinvigorating their odious brand? Of course not.
They've spent decades preparing the conditions for someone like Trump to emerge. and when he
does, of course, they whine like the perpetual children they are.
To those who've tirelessly advocated for Nixon and the patriotic parade of (genteel) thugs that have followed,
I say sieg heil and f*ck off.

I know where I stand. I agree with the Republicans on exactly 0% of their policy proposals. But I'm pleased at least to find someone from the conservative side who can defend their ideas reasonably and intelligently.

(60,071 posts)Look for the narcissist. The most obvious target in todays lineup is, of course, Donald Trump. When he looks at a glass, he is mesmerized by its reflection. If Donald Trump were shaped a little differently, he would compete for Miss America. But whatever the depths of self-enchantment, the demagogue has to say something. So what does Trump say? That he is a successful businessman and that that is what America needs in the Oval Office. There is some plausibility in this, though not much. The greatest deeds of American Presidents midwifing the new republic; freeing the slaves; harnessing the energies and vision needed to win the Cold War had little to do with a bottom line.

(13,029 posts)report to the rest of us who all these folk actually favor as a nominee? Because the things they've said pretty much apply to the whole clown car. Not one of them understands the Constitution, the economy, diplomacy and foreign relations or much of anything else that really matters. Self-identified "conservatives' in this country are reaping what they have sown for the last 35 years, and the current crop of candidates is the (totally expectable) result.

(13,029 posts)But while I'd be more than happy if they prevented anyone from running for president as a Republican, they must at least have someone that they dislike less than everyone else.
If any of them understood mathematics, they'd realize that when you find yourself in a situation where there are no alternatives that make sense, it means your initial assumptions were deeply flawed.
