U.S. says prepared for military solution against Islamic State in Syria
U.S. Vice President Joe Biden said on Saturday that the United States and Turkey were prepared for a military solution against Islamic State in Syria should the Syrian government and rebels fail to reach a political settlement.
The latest round of Syria peace talks are planned to begin on Monday in Geneva but were at risk of being delayed partly because of a dispute over who will comprise the opposition delegation.
Syrian armed rebel groups said on Saturday they held the Syrian government and Russia responsible for any failure of peace talks to end the country's civil war, even before negotiations were due to start.
"We do know it would better if we can reach a political solution but we are prepared ..., if that's not possible, to have a military solution to this operation in taking out Daesh," Biden said at a news conference after a meeting with Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu. Daesh is the pejorative Arabic acronym for Islamic State insurgents who hold parts of Syria.
A U.S. official later clarified that Biden was talking about a military solution to Islamic State, not Syria as a whole.

What could possibly go wrong with that, except everything?

It's the American Way.

(58,598 posts)they have been about the only entity having any success against ISIS. Turkey is very fearful of a Kurdish state, and we're pretty close to having one, given their autonomy within the Iraq quasi-state. Iran doesn't like the idea either, as there is a large Kurdish region in NW Iran, too.
A Kurdish state could include large areas in SE Turkey, NW Iran and NE Iraq, as that is where the ethnic group is located. It's another one of those European post-colonial fiascos in drawing borders arbitrarily based on control of resources instead of on ethnic composition or local wishes.
Nobody but the Kurds wants a Kurdish state, and we (as in the US) have been lovers of the status quo there, rather than yielding to the local ethnic pressures. A strong Turkish incursion into Syria in 'opposition to ISIS' would send a message to the Kurds to not get too ambitious.
One thing the Bush doctrine never took into account was the local power structure and network, of which Hussein was a key component. Once Iraq was eliminated as a viable nation, the rest was pretty predictable, in outline if not in details.
And of course, we'll be selling arms to all sides. Ka-ching! $$$$$

(63,221 posts)It's about time we had a woman leading this country. It seems that to men that the only solution is more military might. I know that Hillary is not the ideal choice, but I think an Elizabeth Warren could steer this country in the right direction.

(59,498 posts)Syrian civil war.
This jibes with Obama and Kerry have both said that there is no military solution to the Syrian civil war. Kerry in particular has spoken of this repeatedly -- and when Russia increased its military support to Assad, Kerry argued that they too would find there their is no military solution there.
The US HAS had a military policy against ISIS for over a year and a half. Where Kerry has long argued that a ceasefire in Syria along with a political solution, that may for some time include Assad, would make the region's fight easier. However, he has made it clear that getting there would be very very hard. It is not surprising that the US would have a plan B.
It would be great if the UN, Kerry, anyone could lead the region to end the US/Russia and Iran/SA proxy wars and all fight extremism together. However, as long as each side things they gain by enabling the violence, the wars and the extremists will continue.
