Onmel: Who thought THIS was a good idea?

Our friends at Merz North America, which is a pharmaceutical company, have introduced the new drug Onmel to treat the scourge that is Toenail Fungus. No, really. That's what it does.

http://www.onmel.com

It'll cure your toenail fungus if it doesn't kill you first: This shit has a Black Box Warning!

According to it:
ONMEL can cause serious life-threatening side effects, including:

Heart failure. Don't take this if you have had heart failure, including congestive heart failure, and call your doctor right away if you have any of these symptoms of congestive heart failure: shortage of breath, swelling of feet, ankles or legs, sudden weight gain, increased tiredness, coughing up white or pink phlegm, fast heartbeat, or waking up at night more than normal for you.

Serious cardiovascular effects. And then they give you a list of thirteen different drugs it cross-reacts with, one of which is "ergot alkaloids," which means if you drop acid you shouldn't take this either.

It also causes liver failure and death, nerve damage, hearing loss, increased liver enzyme in blood test results, upper respiratory infections, UTIs, stomach pain, diarrhea, nausea, headache, tiredness, throat pain, back pain...and, at $230 for seven tablets, starvation, car repossession, eviction, credit card default, deprivation, humiliation, debtor's prison and deportation, dark depictions, dire predictions, life as seen in Dickens' fiction, empty pockets, court dockets, may cause eyes to pop from sockets..and you can cure your toenail fungus with tea tree oil applied topically so what's the point anyway?

1. Or cure with listerine

Listerine mixed with something or other is also supposed to work.

2. Listerine and vinegar

Baking soda works too.

Oh, the best part: it's a 12-week course of treatment. If I'm gonna pay three thousand dollars for a beauty treatment, it sure as HELL ain't gonna be to clear up a fungal infection you can get rid of for twenty bucks!

5. While this does sound scary, it doesn't surprise me that it has to be this dangerous

to really kill toenail fungus. Because I've had it for almost 30 years now and I've tried tea tree oil to no affect. I've been treated by a podiatrist (he fucked up two of my nails permanently and still didn't get rid of it, and I don't believe there is any safe way to treat it successfully. The current drugs on the market have serious side effects too, so I've never been willing to try them.

I've given up trying.

Maybe there are different types of fungus or maybe some people just have a harder time shaking it, but I think, as big a problem as it is, if there was an easy cheap and safe cure, everyone would know about it by now.

Don't worry, I won't try this new drug either.

and to update for recent posts. I don't even wear shoes. I can't, because of foot problems, some of which are caused by toenail fungus. I wear open sandals or flip flops...that's it. So all the suggestions posted here may work for some of you, but they sure don't work for the general public that suffers with this crap. Older people especially.

I first got it from a toenail injury when I was running (jogging). I lost a toenail and it grew back in with the fungus. I saw a doctor but he couldn't fix it and it's spread and now most of my toes have it. I hate this fucking shit. I can't even cut some of my nails they are so thick and warped. It's embarrassing as hell, especially since I have to wear open sandals.

8. I hope you find some relief from that, passiveporcupine.

I prescribe warm, wet beach sand, bare feet and a two week vacation somewhere pleasant.

14. You have my sincere sympathy.

I fought a serious nail fungus for two years. My doctor listed some of the same nasty side effects as shown above for Lamisil (oral, not the OTC topical) and won't prescribe it and the topical didn't touch it. What finally worked after trying everything else in the dermatologist's bag o'tricks was a two-pronged approach: Methotrexate with a side order of Folic Acid and a prescription topical called Exelderm applied to the nails twice daily. Took two or three months, but it finally killed the fungus for good.

I sure hope that they can find something that'll give you some relief because I know it's not a trivial malady.

6. I'm always shocked

By how many pharmaceutical ads there are on US TV... I now live in Europe and when I stream any US TV it's appalling. There's nothing like that anywhere else in the world I've ever been. And there's no looping ads for drugs in doctors offices either. Which I've heard exists in the US now.

Big pharma has run amuck there apparently ...

When my mom visits she brings about 20 different pills with her. And she's not really sick or anything. Overweight but... I know overweight Irish people that take maybe 2-3 pills. Not 20...

It's pretty messed up.
