The root of the idiocy of "I'll vote Republican to show the Democrats I mean business" has its roots in the previous generations' nasty habits of "Don't vote, they're all the same" and "drop out, and things will get better." it's this idea that non-involvement leaves you pure and thus makes things "better" through the power of magical space dolphins and shitty folk music.

It's the same problem that has - until recently - restrained "protest" to "I have sign that I wave between 3 and 5 PM!"

Why, every problem we face is simply there, free-floating and unrelated to anything because, gosh-golly, we wouldn't want to make anyone anxious. Let's just not think about it and count on the crystal space dolphins and folk music to save us.

...

Look, I know it's not pleasant, but there's a problem, and you have to figure out where the problem comes from in order to fix it. And a lot of the problems of the left being all wishy-washy, milquetoast, and halfassed stem from the way the 60's and 70's played out. If you'd rather keep the blame exclusively on the whippersnappers like in the OP (which is not divisive at all since of course they don't count, having never done a fecal mudslide while strung out on barbituates at Woodstock, maaaaaaan) then maybe it could be said it's their fault for listening to a bunch of motherfuckers who accomplished absolutely nothing other than setting 33 as the age good musicians die.

No matter what it is that is wrong, the cause can be traced back to God.

So there you have it.

"gosh-golly, we wouldn't want to make anyone anxious."

Legions of the next generation are anxious, with severe anxiety issues, behaviors and health issues, medicated, self medicated, disturbed ... rampant autism, Asperger's, Social Anxiety Disorder, addiction, rage, ADHD, hell yeah they're anxious and they'll be the first to tell you how fucked up they are ...

... and it's convenient to blame the Boomers.

But they're in for a rude awakening if they think that voting Republican will fix the problem.

...I think the bigger concern is they won't bother to vote at all, not feeling sufficiently motivated this time, and that's, well, half as bad.
