Kalamazoo is on the way to Chicago and points West. Flint is on the way to "Up North" (my fellow Michiganders will get that) and the Upper Peninsula. Possible brain tumor comes to mind (ala Charles Whitman), but that is just conjecture.

We called it "up North." Well, my dad called it Wisconsin (being born in Milwaukee).

Congress gave it to Michigan as compensation for awarding the Toledo Strip to Ohio.

The west side of Michigan, 3 hours drive time from Democratic Detroit, is sickeningly right wing. People are too strapped competing with the Jones' to pull out an extra couple hundred bucks a month for the co-pays.

"I can't afford it," I hear from them.

"How much do you think it should cost?" I respond.

They tend to become silent.

It's a college town, so there's a strong very liberal side to it. And then there are the way right-wing folks you see so much in West Michigan too.

I'm suggesting he's in that zone where a single payer system would have given him some help that ACA could miss. Of course the right wing way could have left him with no chance.
