Tomorrow morning, I'm moving to Orlando to greater pursue my education. I got a call from an IT support company that I applied for that I had got the job. I go in for the usual "red tape" Monday and I officially start training the following Monday.
After two years, I have a job. Not just a job, but a chance to give my wife and son the life they desire. I can finally say to my son when he shows interest in a toy "Sure son, just don't open it until we get to the house." It's $14 an hour, which isn't much down there but at least it's something. I just wish that this was the story for every single one of my fellow DU'ers out there that are struggling now.

(81 posts)I'll be staying between Apopca and Lake Mary with some family until my finances stabilize a little then we're getting our own place. Rent for the place my family has is only 700 a month for a 4 bedroom, 2 bath which is cheaper than in my home town. They do a weekly rent payment system which is easier on my mind and wallet.

(19,736 posts)That is so good that you're getting a job, and in IT, your salary will go up. And once you have the certifications and everything you want, you can only go up. Good on you!

(81 posts)I'm not complaining haha. At least I'll have money coming in. Hopefully it won't be long until I get a raise, considering my qualifications.

(53,410 posts)It wasn't too long ago when people were posting mostly about losing their jobs. Now more people are posting about getting jobs. I hope you're just the first of many. Congratulations and give your son a hug for us.
And welcome to DU. Thanks for thinking of us and posting this good news.

(81 posts)considering how many people are out of work right now. I'm glad I renewed fading hope within a lot of people that saw this. Ever since I started posting (lurked for about a year or so), everyone has been just so nice and supportive. Of course I'll think of my DU family

(6,161 posts)$14/hr is actually pretty good for FL & it seems like you have drive to make it so I'm sure you'll climb the ladder quickly. Congrats!

Or to paraphrase Bill Clinton, "There's nothing wrong with living in Florida that can't be fixed with what is right with living in Florida."

(81 posts)I guess I won't be moving after all. The night I posted this, someone held me up and stole my wallet which included my debit card and the cash I had on hand. I checked my balance, and not even 30min after I was robbed, my account was emptied (only $1500, but that's all I had to my name.) Bank said it would take up to a month to get my money back, if I even do. So yeah, I'm boned ._.

(25,816 posts)I don't get how someone could take 15 hundred out of your account in 30 minutes. My bank will let me get 400 in 24 hours at the max.
Plus, all ATMs have cameras, so the thief is toast. Good luck.
Tommykun
(81 posts)The bank won't give me a straight answer. They won't let me know if the ATM video has an accurate depiction of the crook, or anything. The cops are just kind of shrugging me off every time I request information.
I'll figure out some way to get down there by monday.

(1,688 posts)But isnt $14/hr in Orlando the equivalent to $11/hr in say Omaha? which still puts you below $30k per year for at least family of 3.
but it's better than my $7.50/hr job here doing the exact same thing. I won't be living in the metro area, but outside it. The rent on the home I'm getting is only about $40 more than what I'm paying now and other utilities (internet, water, electricity) are a bit cheaper which will make up the difference. The standard of living in the area I'm moving to isn't much different than I'm used to so at least I'll be bringing in a little more per check.
Plus, the big thing is that my school is there so I can attend lectures and such to improve my quality of education. Once I graduate, if I'm lucky enough, I'll move to where my job takes me.
