One way to stop Trump is for Romney or some other respected GOPer to run a third party campaign.

Is it too late for that? It would have to be someone from the right using enough dog-whistles to pull some folks from the Trump ranks. Of course that means a Dem President...which actually doesn't sound so bad to some Republicans who absolutely loathe Trump and Cruz.

1. To do that they would have to think that electing the Democratic nominee is the preferred option

to a Trump presidency. Would a Democrat be to the right of Trump?

I'm thinking that with the re-appearance of Mittens in the headlines after a three-year absence, the GOP is thinking of bringing him in as the alternative and putting him up for the nomination.

He didn't win last time, but he came fairly close and he was running against an incumbent. When you look at the current GOP field, he is, for them, the least of all evils.

Don't rule it out. They are panicking at this stage. They've got Trump, who they hate, and a stable full of bona fide losers.

5. Agreed. I think what Nichomachus was saying was about a brokered convention

Agreed. I think what Nichomachus was saying was about a brokered convention. If there's a 3 say split, they might have a chance to unify behing Mittens.

But that said, that won't happen. The Republicans have too many winner-take-all primaries in March. If you have a series of 40-30-30 elections, Trump wins whole state delegations most of the time. He'll walk into the convention with a solid majority. Unless Cruz or Rubio eventually drops out and throws his support to the other non-Trump (which neither will do until it's too late), Trump wins.

are the media and political junkies. Why? Because it would be fun for both. I am one of the latter. I would enjoy it but these rumored brokered conventions have never happened in my lifetime so I will have to settle for something else.

Nutso as it sounds, they really might hate Hillary more than The Donald. Fucking graspers, they hate anyone who beats them at their own game.

I'd bet Bernie could win a few of them over, ironically enough. But I fear his chance to try that is passing.

If Hillary wins, they can keep on putting the blame for everything on her, if Trump wins, as a republican, they can't do that, they are stuck with the republican party getting the blame for anything he screws up. I actually think they would rather blame Hillary than take the chance of Trump putting the last nail the coffin of the GOP's future plans to rule the world.

I have also heard republicans say they won't vote for anyone if it's between Trump and Hillary, or Trump and Bernie. That also helps the Democratic nominee. Trump has really ticked off the powers that be in the GOP, and it won't help him if he keeps on pissing them off, and he will.

the VP and go on a 4 year vacation. Like Bush/Cheney. Trump will not like to go to the office or even live there, I would imagine he would spend a lot of time in AF One though. Maybe he can talk them into getting yacht 1 also.
