WASHINGTON -- Payday lenders have been gunning for the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau since the day President Barack Obama tapped Elizabeth Warren to set up the new agency. They've had plenty of help from congressional Republicans -- longtime recipients of campaign contributions from the payday loan industry. As the CFPB has moved closer to adopting new rules to shield families from predatory lending, the GOP has assailed the agency from every conceivable angle -- going after it's budget, attempting to tie its hands with new layers of red tape, fomenting conspiracy theories about rogue regulators illegally shutting down businesses and launching direct attacks on payday loan rules themselves.
To date, the GOP blitz has resulted in a few close shaves for the young agency, but no actual defeats. But the industry has cultivated a powerful new ally in recent weeks: Democratic National Committee Chair Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Fla.).
Wasserman Schultz is co-sponsoring a new bill that would gut the CFPB's forthcoming payday loan regulations. She's also attempting to gin up Democratic support for the legislation on Capitol Hill, according to a memo obtained by The Huffington Post.
LISTEN to HuffPost's analysis of the bill in the latest episode of the "So That Happened" politics podcast below. The discussion begins at the 53:35 mark:

It is tragic that wedges are being driven between long-time productive coalitions, like White Liberals and PoC.
But some price will be paid for all of this, and I wonder who is going to foot the bill.

A thought just hit me too. Is she trying to play intercept because of the Hillary emails and the Clinton Foundation? And then, maybe she has a lot of behind the scenes information and does;t even CARE if she loses her seat! She's not doing this for her health, she's doing this because she WANTS A HIGHER POSITION... Isn't that like going against the President?
This is INSANE!
After the election, Obamas top political operatives strategist David Plouffe, reelection campaign manager Jim Messina and then-DNC executive director Patrick Gaspard, now U.S. ambassador to South Africa debated the decision of retaining her as DNC chair so intensely that there was already a replacement in mind: R.T. Rybak, the former mayor of Minneapolis and a DNC vice chairman.
But there was nervousness about the optics of Obama dropping a woman from the party leadership. Plus, the sense internally was that they had originally picked her largely to help win the womens vote and avert problems with Jewish donors, and both had indeed happened, whatever the other problems.

then side with Warren? Then Clinton can reap the benefits of appearing like a champion against "predatory lending" (without hurting her friends at Goldman) and a fighter for the little guy.
Clinton would emerge as Warren's BBF, and gee, wouldn't that be a great way to "absorb" the Bernie demographic into her campaign?
I have to give them some points for devious creativity--if this is the case.
However, if DWS and the Clinton camp are visibly, publicly and obviously sabotaging Warren because of her failure to 'go along' then they've just declared war on the base of the Dem party and Sanders supporters during a close primary battle.
I can't believe DWS/the Clinton camp would be so brazenly destructive, stupid and vicious as to sabotage Warren like that. Are they that horrifying?
That's so abusive--that I really hold out hope that they're just playing devious kabuki theater with HRC playing the part of hero to damsel-in-distress Warren (for political purposes that benefit Clinton of course).
Otherwise the corporatist-establishment wing just declared war on the base of their own party.
I guess we shall see how this plays out.

(493 posts)Debbie Wasserman Schultz Has NEGATIVE Net Worth Of $1.04 Million 3rd Poorest Member Of Congress
The chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee, Wasserman Schultz has spent most of her career in political office, starting as a state legislator in her home state of Florida. She has two mortgages with a combined worth of at least $750,000, plus $350,000 in home equity and personal loans. She also carried more than $50,000 in credit card debt in 2012. Her assets include a spouse-held $100,000 stock in the community bank where her husband works and several small bank accounts including college savings plans for her children.

(1,508 posts)Is it the entire party or just some of those that "say" they are members of the democratic party. Are we witnessing what could be considered one party rule in this country? The leadership of both parties appear to be owned by the Oligarchs.

(3,017 posts)It has been that way for a long time, at least since 1992 when Bill Clinton assumed control of the Democratic Party. Each party maintains some red meat issues to throw to their bases around election time, largely social wedge issues like abortion, gay rights, composition of the Supreme Court, etc. But when it comes to serving business interests, there is not much difference between the Republican and Democratic parties. See the 0.1%ers pouring money into campaigns and Corporate PACs for the mainstream members of both parties. See past mainstream politicians of both parties working for the same lobbying firms.

This is something that should be eliminated by the electorate that has to be governed by these corporate shields. When will we get to vote for something like this or better put against something like this. My answer is never. If you look at this seriously, you can see that many who run for election to congress are really only auditioning for the Oligarchs so that they can after they leave congress ride the gravy train that is known as lobbyist of K street or stealth lobbyist if you're really good. Thanks for the link BernieforPres2016. Perfect!

The Clinton camp appears to be sending a very strong signal.
Wonder what's been going on behind the scenes?
That's a mighty big move for the head of the DNC to take. DWS all but declared war on Warren.
Something happened to catalyze this.
BernieforPres2016
(3,017 posts)Obama did not make a serious effort to push Warren to head the Consumer Financial Protection Agency that she created. 44 Republican senators laid across the tracks to block a possible Warren appointment, and that gave Obama and the Democrats cover for appointing somebody who not be a threat to Wall Street and the financial services industry. In that post, she could would have had a platform to push for reform in banking fees to consumers, credit cards, payday lenders, mortgage lenders and others. Neither party wanted her in that kind of position where she could do damage to their Wall Street masters.
