Question for All regarding Democratic V. Democrat

Happy Super Tuesday everyone. I went to our polling place here in Texas with my dad. As we were standing in line (yes! a line! and it wasn't all Republicans!) to be parceled off left or right (fun side note: Democratic Party people were on the right of the room with Republicans on the left), I listened to the woman who asks which ballot we needed and warns us to shut off our phones... and I got more than a little irritated.

"Hi? Are you here to vote? Please make sure your phone is off. Are you voting Republican or Democrat? Republican Party voters go this way, and Democrat Party voters go this way... They will have your Republican Party ballot box or your Democrat Party ballot box assignments there."

As I was close enough to her, every time she said,"Democrat Party," I said (loud enough to hear) "Democratic Party." I did this three times, until my dad (71) elbowed me to cut it out. I said, again loud enough to here,"She shouldn't be working if she can't get the name of the party right..."

He, of course, thought I was nuts. On the car ride home, we had a (let's call it) discussion about it.

Dad,"I've been calling myself a Democrat ever since I began voting for them."

Me,"That's not what I'm saying. I call myself a Democrat too, but I vote for the Democratic Party, not the Democrat Party."

We went round and round... mind you, this is also the man--whom I adore--who called my grandpa a traitor for voting for Stevenson (a divorced Catholic) over Eisenhower (a war hero).

So, was I wrong...? This is purely fun and games on a Super Tuesday because my dad is over.

whole purpose for them saying it that way. Very childish of them, and yes it does get under my skin because of the intent behind it.

It was the third time she said it that threw me over the edge. Thanks so much for your input.

I don't see the big deal in calling it "Democrat" party and it's not a big issue for me.

You're not wrong, though. I just disagree with you!

place SHOULD try and get it right? I mean, I know we here in Texas are known for having a poor education system...but dam that is simple shit right there.

As for what we Dems call ourselves, I don't care really. The term when used by a Republican is negative and a slur toward party members.

Because it's a small neighborhood, people know each other and this woman knew what she was saying.

You have no way of knowing if this person was trying to insult Democrats or just didn't know any better, was repeating what she'd heard, but I would have explained the background, and thus your reaction, to your Dad.

Sadly, I do know this woman... so I know her intent, which is (sort of) why I spoke up. If there's a thing in our neighborhood to be in charge of, she's in charge.

She should be glad you pointed this out so she wouldn't insult anyone else - who might have been rougher on her than you were... But from what you said, she doesn't sound like she's open to learning, thinks she knows better.

ha ha, even I don't believe that. But seriously, it's not worth getting upset about.

If the other kids on the playground call you "turkeymonkey" you can get upset and start a fight about it.... or you can just ignore it and have a good swing.
