It's just terrible. Period. I have never seen anything like this election season in my almost 50 years on this good planet. If we don't diligently work to counter the stupidity and the dive for the lowest common denominator, we will end up in a real life Idiocracy. I have been here since 01. Rarely put up an OP, but my goodness. Enough is enough.

(19,558 posts)It's as simple as that. We have the power to vote. If we don't wield our power to counter these nuts, then we deserve what we get as much as the party leaders of the GOP do now.
This one is our to lose at this point.

(5,692 posts)I've thought for a long time - how could we possibly lose to Trump? Well, it could happen if we don't go out and vote. I have plenty of (I hate to call them that, but it is what it is) low information voter friends who think Trump is a "good guy who is telling it like it is and making sense". They're not even conservatives. Just not that into politics. His style appeals to them. How do you counter that? Anytime you come at them with facts, their eyes glaze over.

(10,336 posts)I live in Indiana. Do I deserve one other people dish up to me? our primary is in May, so often the nominee is chosen before we even have a chance to vote

(5,692 posts)People deserve to be educated politically, and not be inundated with lies from biased media sources only out for ratings. I honestly have no answer as to how to fix this, though.

(17,306 posts)what do you suggest we do, that we aren't already doing?

(5,692 posts)Other than trying to talk sense into our friends and neighbors with facts and sources we can provide, not much. And considering that we all have confirmation bias, most of our efforts will fall on deaf ears. But even one changed mind might make it worth the effort. I'm basically just ranting and expressing my frustrations, which I believe we all share.

(3,447 posts)The only people upset about it now are those who haven't had to deal with it. It's not from any one political party, its the culture itself, guided straight into the trashcan by greedy swindlers and unethical capitalists (and a lot of times that's just a repetitious name).
The only BREAK from this Idiocracy will come when the Establishment falls.
As a side note, in a democracy, the 'lowest common denominator' is exactly what you appeal to. It's pretty much inherent in the name.

(14,459 posts)Lots of people have here on DU have wondered over the years why we haven't had a revolution yet.
Methinks the pot is finally boiling over. I see the fear/anger in the eyes of our "leaders." They know is is "something."

(5,420 posts)The people need truth in order to understand what they are voting for. I saw tonight Republicans blaming dem values and claiming how they want to help the people, when we know they are lying. The people can't figure it out because they are too busy just trying to survive to be able to learn the truth.
This is just how the oligarchs planned it. When we lost our media, we lost America.
The key is to get real media back. Truthful media not story readers. Not carriers of water. Not Baghdad Bob's.

(6,133 posts)They thought the terminator would kick ass in California. We all know the Enron story and how Gray Davis was wrongly recalled.
It's happening now with Trump. I can not figure these people out.
It's like, no matter how many times they are wrong, they do not do any research but rather go to the next election with how they feel about the whole thing without learning anything from the past.

(5,692 posts)Why is this cycle repeating over and over? Not only that, it's getting worse each time. 8 years ago, compassionate conservatism was en vogue. If any of the Republicans running even uttered the word 'compassion' he'd be booed off the stage.

(6,133 posts)I cannot remember if it was the 2008 or 2012 GOP primaries, when Ron Paul did well in the Iowa caucas, but his followers thought it was stolen.
I watched Rachel, and she was joking and light hearted about the how Paul followers were marching and shouting chants. I did not feel light hearted about it. It reminded me of fascism.
Thinking about it, it had to be 2008, because the son Rand came after with that famous interview between him and Rachel, in which he thought she was a fan.
Those same marchers are still angry, and they back Trump.
I think we might be in more trouble than before.
