The German beer industry is in shock after finding that 14 different popular beer brands have traces of the probably carcinogenic herbicide, glyphosate an ingredient found in Monsantos best-selling weed killer, Round Up. Germanys Agricultural minster is playing down the risks in order to save one of the countries best-selling exports. ...

(755 posts)totally toxic to our lives - and the toxic crap is, by now, everywhere.
Poison the land that grains grow upon, and ultimately poison the people. Poison the ground that GMO cotton grows on, and ultimately you poison the people.
Study finds that 85 percent of tampons, gauze, and other cotton personal care products contain glyphosate.

(755 posts)Here's the GMO glyphosate universe in a nutshell:
"Glyphosate-resistant crops represent more than 80% of the 120 million ha of transgenic crops grown annually worldwide..." http://www.agbioforum.org/v12n34/v12n34a10-duke.htm
Glyphosate IS everywhere and - in our beer, tampons and whatever - because of GMOs.

(135,425 posts)so that it can be used to kill weeds without killing the plant, but not all are.
You can separate the two issues and you should. See, when you conflate, you don't draw more people to support the glyphosate piece, you cause people who don't find GMOs to be the end of the world to tune you out.
Yes, there are GMO crops that are engineered to be GR, but not all are.
GMO doesnt mean glyphosate-resistant
Calling a plant a genetically modified organism means only that its genome has been modified by the activity of humans. But lots of people conflate the idea of a GMO plant with one thats been created to be resistant to the herbicide glyphosate, also known by the brand name Roundup. Its true that the most well-known GMO crops currently grown contain a gene that makes them resistant to glyphosate, which allows farmers to spray the chemical to kill weeds while allowing their crop to grow. But thats just one example of a gene inserted into a plant.
Its sensible to evaluate GMOs not on how they are made, but rather on what new traits the modified plants have. For instance, while it can be argued that glyphosate resistance in plants is not good for the environment because of increased use of the pesticide, other GMOs are unlikely to cause this problem.

You don't have to pay attention to this point if you don't want to, but I do believe I'm right on this score. You push as many people away -- if not more -- than you draw in. Broccoli, after all, is a "GMO." GHW Bush may not have liked it, but lots of people do.

(755 posts)Same toxic results: Toxic beer, toxic tampons, toxic minds. It's a toxic freaking system.

(135,425 posts)It's not a One Size Fits All issue. Simplifying it down to that weakens your argument.

(755 posts)GMOs and glyphosate go hand in glove.
The toxic beer, tampons, and whatever tell the story. Those who really want the truth will see that while GMOs and glyphosate are apparently two separate industrial products, they are same toxic approach to land, food, and humanity. And they are used together in over 80% of instances as the facts show.
But of course as anyone paying attention knows there is also a lavishly funded corporate campaign to obfuscate the whole stinkin toxic mess.

(135,425 posts)No sense arguing with someone who doesn't want to exchange views.
You can assert that something "tells the story" but the truth is, it doesn't. This is a far more complex topic than what you want to make it, and conflating all GMOs w/Roundup resistance is brutal over-simplification that doesn't do the subject matter any justice.

(755 posts)...I feel I must continue to speak out and to oppose the poisoning of my family, my community, my nation, and my world. Since 80% of the GMO crops planted in the world are grown with glyphosate, it is fully accurate to note that the two corporate industrial ag products are linked.
I assert the basic right to know what is in my food.
And I further assert the right to not be poisoned.
On these matters of grave consequence I shall not yield.

(3,813 posts)In rainy climates, accelerating the dry-down of grain via a RoundUp spray is used, though by what percentage of growers is controversial. Nonetheless, pre-harvest RoundUp applications are presently recommended by some Land Grant University sources:

Not a good idea, in my estimation.

(8,812 posts)Jerry Crawford of the Crawford & Mauro Law Firm in Des Moines, Iowa, bundled $151,727 for the campaign over the quarter ending Dec. 31, FEC documents show. Crawford is senior adviser to Clinton's 2016 presidential campaign and was the Midwest Co-Chair of the Hillary Clinton for President Campaign in 2007-08. His firm listed Monsanto as a client in the most recent quarter, reporting $60,000 in lobbying income from Monsanto. Monsanto is known as one of the nation's most powerful corporations, and is currently engaged in a range of public policy debates over regulation of its genetically modified crops and top herbicide product, Roundup.
