What scares me about Trump, far more than just who he is, or what he does or doesn't stand for (he hasn't actually said anything concrete) is his followers. If he wins, THEY win. They win the right to be in-your-face racists, "go-back-where-you-came-from" racists, "head-back-to-the-kitchen" sexists... and loud and proud.
I absolutely, positively, CANNOT let him win. Because that's letting racism win. I will not allow that in my country.
So, when I hear some "Democrats" talk about staying at home if Hillary wins, I am alarmed. Because, in my mind, they are saying that they will not stand up for me and African-Americans, they will not stand up for Latinos, they will not stand up for diversity at all, and they are willing to let racists and racism win this election.
And it's very hard for me to respect that. But that's what happens if Trump wins, that's what happens if Democrats stay home.
That's why I am preparing myself to campaign like mad between September and November. To make calls, knock on doors, write essays, blast Facebook... whatever it takes to get the message out that we do NOT WANT TO GO BACK to the days when racists were in control of our country. Sure, racism has become been fashionable, but held at bay by watchful individuals. And a black president who is good at his job, and not turning into the bogeyman that white racists claimed he would.
But Trump would unleash a level of hatred against black and brown, and endorse it. I am very, very scared of what his presidency would mean about the American people.
So, to all of you who say that you would stay at home if your candidate doesn't win, please be mindful of how devastating it would be to black and brown people if Trump wins.

(37,573 posts)So I don't know why that is your standard.
The minimum wage has stayed at $7.25 for almost all of the Obama administration.
Also, abortion is very, very unlikely to "become illegal". If Roe v. Wade gets over-turned, that just means that states CAN outlaw abortion. How many states WILL? Not California, not New York, not illinois, which is already a huge portion of the United States population. Heck, even the red state of South Dakota voted down an abortion ban.
Would you feel better somehow if Cruz won? One Latino that I know is all gung-ho for Cruz. Also, my current state representative is a black man. I hope he loses.
He's a Republican. One who probably would support Trump if he is the nominee.

(6,145 posts)It's not Trump I fear as much as the carte blanche on racism. The overt consent to allow racism to dominate our country.
I have reasons to be afraid of Rubio and Cruz, but they do not excite the racist base that Trump does.

(5,781 posts)I hate to tell you this -- most of them. Others will slap severe restrictions on.
The main reason the SD ban failed was that there was no rape/incest clause. As a practical matter, it's difficult to find clinics in the state.
I can name seven states I'm reasonably certain will keep abortion legal: California, New York, Illinois, Hawaii, Maryland, Oregon, and Massachusetts. Minnesota, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Washington State, Vermont, Delaware I suspect will keep it legal, but may enact some restrictions. IMO, every other state will outlaw outright or severely restrict access.

(154,021 posts)and I know this is not popular, but there is a certain number of conservative minorities that will vote for Trump.
I could even try to explain this, but I really will not bother.

(6,145 posts)Black Republicans exist. I have one in my family. Three actually. Two that I'm on speaking terms with. The other one I just consider an idiot.
I'm sure that when Clarence Thomas goes to the voting booth, he will vote for Trump. Same for Tim Scott, although I think he endorsed Rubio.
So, point it out to me all you like. It does not make me less afraid.
