(53,997 posts)but the most revealing word in that sentence is actually "embarrassed"
There is nothing embarrassing about working for a living. Work should be rewarded and celebrated. It gives us dignity to work and it cuts the soul to work and not be rewarded economically for it. That's why the minimum wage needs to keep up with the cost of living index, even if it's modestly inflationary.
The questions of economic policy really tell us our values as a society. Do we value the dignity of work? Or do we value the accumulation of wealth at the expense of others? Obviously the current answer is "a little bit of each." Bernie and the Democrats are only saying we need to value work a little bit more and wealth a little bit less.

(58,646 posts)I'd argue that the "little bit of each" was what we felt about work vs risk taking about 30 years ago. Currently, we don't value work much at all. If we did, minor adjustments to the minimum wage would not be such a major lift. It's what happens when investment for the sake of investment takes precedence over investment for the purpose of financing real production of material goods.

Bernie called him on it and he did a 180 the next day. But the quote is still out there, if anyone cares to call him on it.
By the way, as far as I know the only candidate who has made that quote an issue is Bernie.

I've retained an old label: voter. Today is primary day in MI, though I voted last week. Go Bernie.
