he finally went there: Donald Trump's 47% comment moment

Donald Trump's 47 Percent Moment

The GOP front-runner blasts Mitt Romney's infamous remarks. But he recently suggested 50 percent of Americans are deadbeats.

"The problem we have right now—we have a society that sits back and says we don't have to do anything. Eventually, the 50 percent cannot carry—and it's unfair to them—but cannot carry the other 50 percent."--Donald Trump

"Most Americans think they are temporarily financially embarrassed millionaires."

but the most revealing word in that sentence is actually "embarrassed"

There is nothing embarrassing about working for a living. Work should be rewarded and celebrated. It gives us dignity to work and it cuts the soul to work and not be rewarded economically for it. That's why the minimum wage needs to keep up with the cost of living index, even if it's modestly inflationary.

The questions of economic policy really tell us our values as a society. Do we value the dignity of work? Or do we value the accumulation of wealth at the expense of others? Obviously the current answer is "a little bit of each." Bernie and the Democrats are only saying we need to value work a little bit more and wealth a little bit less.

I'd argue that the "little bit of each" was what we felt about work vs risk taking about 30 years ago. Currently, we don't value work much at all. If we did, minor adjustments to the minimum wage would not be such a major lift. It's what happens when investment for the sake of investment takes precedence over investment for the purpose of financing real production of material goods.

we can't compete with other countries because of our wages.

Bernie called him on it and he did a 180 the next day. But the quote is still out there, if anyone cares to call him on it.

By the way, as far as I know the only candidate who has made that quote an issue is Bernie.

Now that I'm retired, I have earned a few new labels: deadbeat, geezer, etc.

I've retained an old label: voter. Today is primary day in MI, though I voted last week. Go Bernie.
