A low ranking Israeli diplomat (consul to Florida and Puerto Rico) hitting his daughter with a belt is objectionable to be sure (I speak from experience on the painful side of that belt), but there are hundreds of criminal incidents a year involving diplomats, many of more serious criminal offenses. He has been fired. The legal system is dealing with it.

If you search DU for the word diplomat, the top few hits are about Israelis. The other hits are serious international incidents.

There seems to be a strange fascination with Israelis. I am interested in understanding the nature of this fascination. Is there really such a fascination? Of course it is a country of some political and cultural significance to people in the US, but this story is of neither. Am I missing something or misunderstanding something about the significance of this story?

Jury: To be clear, I am not speculating that this has anything to do with anti-Jewish feelings conscious or unconscious. And if it is the case that the OP in fact was especially sensitive to noticing a story with an Israeli angle, this is not unusual at DU. I inquire as an opportunity to understand this phenomenon, not to give the OP a hard time.

Who are, in my experience, bar none, the most irritating group in the diplomatic community to deal with.
