This makes no sense. Did someone hack his account?

(14,733 posts)Hence I'm anti-'voting for Trump'. Apparently that now includes being anti-'Neil DeGrasse Tyson'. I can live with that.
djean111
(14,255 posts)I don't think it is an endorsement. I think he means that people are more aghast at Trump's supporters than at Trump himself, and people may believe that Trump's supporters should not be allowed to vote.
Or something.

(6,592 posts)Yes, I do oppose them, in the sense I think they're idiots. I'm not standing at the polling place with a shotgun or a literary test or anything!
That is a really strange tweet.

I still don't understand the point of the Tyson's tweet. But maybe free citizens are "free" to assault others in Tyson's world?

(53,410 posts)I'm anti Trump and anti-Trump supporters.
Actually I'm more anti-Trump supporters than I am anti-Trump.
So I think he 's right.
malletgirl02
(1,523 posts)Tyson is saying that he is against free citizens voting for Trump.
lunatica
(53,410 posts)In the sense that by being that way, one is exactly the same as that which is being criticized.
It's like using the word tolerant. I used to say I was a very tolerant person until one day it struck me forcefully that I'm actually quite intolerant of those who are intolerant. To be truly tolerant one has to also tolerate the intolerant. Oops! Circular logic where you always end up contradicting yourself by your own words.
Degrassi-Tyson is just messing with us. He's stating the truth of our own circular thinking. I actually think he's just having fun with words and giving us a bit of a jolt while doing it.

(26 posts)Tyson's follows what trending and makes provocative tweets. That's his thing. It is only natural he'd weigh in on Trump.
Is this tweet hard to parse? Sure. That means people will argue over it. Makes for ever more media tempest in a teapot.
When it comes to manipulating the media, Tyson's good but not quite as good as Trump.
Does Neil ever do astrophysics? Not so far as I know.

(2,807 posts)He has numerous pro GOP tweets. I was flabbergasted when I started following him, and his backing of The GOP and Republicans in general. It got so apparent that I just assumed it wasn't the real Neil DeGrasseTyson, that it was somebody else using his famous name to get out their own politics views.
But yeah, if you look at the tweets from this account you'll see a WingNut bend.
Bums me out.

(9,527 posts)He's very clearly pro-science, including global warming, government funding of science, evolution and very much against teaching things like intelligent design.

He's also worked with PETA, not exactly a bastion of conservatives.

(4,213 posts)First, this is a glimpse into his character:
Then there is the fact that Republicans hate him. Why? Because he likes science. See this entire hateful cover story done against him by the National Review. Here is the opening paragraph:
It goes down hill from there.
The most positive thing I've heard Tyson say about Republicans, and this was a backhanded remark, was that we could get them to fund science so long as we convinced them it was good for the economy. In his words, "there is a truth--that no Republican wants to die poor."
In addition to that on virtually every social issue I've heard him speak on, he's come out as a liberal. He's even done interviews for PETA.
Not to mention that he identifies as an "agnostic" (though he's really an atheist). He's done entire presentations on the dangers of religion and how it is essentially incompatible with science.
His big thing, though, is that he doesn't want to be claimed by a particular group. He doesn't want to be known by any thing other than a scientist. So, he's always careful not to really come down too hard one way or another (see the PETA interview for example). Or, if he does, he tries to avoid totally trashing the other side.
I am unsure where he stands on economic issues like unionization and trade agreement and other such things, but I can safely say that having watched numerous interviews and the like--Tyson is a strong social liberal. That would make sense based on his background as well.
