I think the GOP is headed down a dark and dangerous path!

The outcome is not good for the country and will pull everyone else down with them! Trump can say that he doesn't encourage the violence at his rallies, the GOP can say that they are not condoning Trump and his rhetoric, but down deep, not to far down, there is bigotry and hate that right wing is showing their colors. I hope and pray that we can get thru to November with out someone getting seriously hurt or killed. This also is damaging to the respect for Americans.

1. Most of us are thinking the unthinkable

and holding our breaths.

2. What makes you so sure this will end in November?

Will these Trump supporters all of a sudden start hugging Muslims and Hispanics should Hillary win the White House? Will a Republican House work with Hillary?

That's why I said before that this election risks creating a very large social rift within the country. Things could actually get worse after the election.

4. Good point. Even if Trump's racism and xenophobia result in an electoral disaster for republicans

in 2016 (one would hope), the long term damage of giving 'respectability' to racists and xenophobes will be harder to deal with than it was when they were somewhat confined to the 'dark corners' of society.

In many European countries the conservative movement has fractured into a 'mainstream, moderate' (kind of pre-Reagan republican) party and a 'right wing populist' (kind of our tea party) faction. Of course, most European countries have multi-party, parliamentary democracies while ours is entrenched in a two-party presidential system. It will be interesting to see how the fracture among American conservatives plays out during and after the election.
