Judge reviewing Heritage Act lawsuit regarding segregated monument (SC)

... Charleston attorney Armand Derfner told a state judge that requiring the General Assembly’s approval to alter segregated plaques on a Greenwood war memorial is an unnecessary burden for the group of residents he represents.

“We’re simply asking to remove the burden that the statute, the Heritage Act, puts on speech,” Derfner said. “What we’re asking is to take that burden off so people can speak, debate, petition freely, as you can for every other thing.”

Some town residents want to change plaques that list local dead from the World Wars because they segregate fallen soldiers under “colored” and “white” labels ...
