Orrin Hatch: "Obama could easily name Merrick Garland, who is a fine man, but he probably won't..."

“(Obama) could easily name Merrick Garland, who is a fine man, he probably won’t do that because this appointment is about the election. So I’m pretty sure he’ll name someone the (liberal Democratic base) wants.”

He said that not too long ago.

Especially as he will now probably refuse to even meet with this person. The very person he suggested.

Smart, I guess. Although I am disappointed that he nominated someone so old. Maybe he figured there would be a better chance of confirmation that way?

When I was just coming out and we were fighting the Briggs Amendment Hatch said this:

"I wouldn't want to see homosexuals teaching school anymore than I'd want to see members of the American Nazi Party teaching school."

On the Endless War he says this:

"Our heroes are fighting to bring stability to the Middle East, and they have put pressure on all of the tyrannies of the Middle East. They have taken a stand against tyranny, against terrorists, and for the prospect of decent societies throughout that region."

On the Death Penalty he says this:

"Capital punishment is our society's recognition of the sanctity of human life"

Bringing Hatch's endorsement as evidence of excellence is like telling me Ron and Nancy championed anti AIDS efforts. And I'm getting pretty sick of being taken for an uninformed Republican by people who are supposed to be leading my Party.

Just shows how full of BS Orrin Hatch and his ilk are.

Because they will still refuse to meet with this person, even though he was the one Hatch named as a good option.

probably bothers me more than it does you. After the lauding of the Reagans about AIDS by our front runner I feel like this Party needs to lay off. I'm sick of it, endless bullshit year after year. How fun for them, it's a big game and a trick in which we seek to please those who call their neighbors Nazis in order to trick them.
Of course no one will ever made amends for what they do to us, for the constant rhetorical bullying and lack of any basic loyalty.

If Hatch had said that about any other minority group no one on DU or in the WH would do anything but condemn him.

Tired of it. Reagan Democrats the lot of them.

say 'let's give him what he wants as a fun game'.
After Hillary made those comments about the Reagans I suddenly remembered who I'm hanging out with and why I need to watch my back at all times.
This is another reminder. I am not among friends but among foes. I thought it had changed but this is still to a great extent the Party of Reagan Democrats.

The Republicans have yet to do this thing you are praising, they will meet him and probably approve him. But you are not even waiting to see what happens, you are crowing over the fact that Obama sought to please a raging bigot who calls gay people Nazis. If he'd said those things about Muslims all of you would hate him but he attacked LGBT so that's different to the Christian Moderates.
I was 18 there was a line on my ballot about firing all the gay teachers and Hatch, he equated gay teachers to Nazis. So I loathe him. Obama does not. He loves and respects and often agrees with Hatch. We are not the same people. You dig this sort of crap and I find it to be a demonstration of the true hearts of the Reagan Democrats.

Obama is not irresponsible, and he wouldn't play games with nominating someone for the Supreme Court. The nominee seems very well qualified and not ideologically driven. If the Republicans will not hold hearings on this nomination it will harm them and the institution of the Court. We should all be pressuring the Senate to do its duty.

9. Another interesting wrinkle
Wed Mar 16, 2016, 11:26 AM
Mar 2016

Garland is Gov. Terry Branstad's 2nd cousin. A letter is floating around that Branstad sent to Sen. Grassley supporting him for U.S. Supreme Court appointment.

The Judiciary Committee is 11 to 9 with Grassley (Chair), Hatch, and Cruz as three of the members.

Can Ted Cruz be in two places at once? It seems his duties as Senator will conflict with him running as President. He may not be available for some key votes.

Grassley is up for reelection this year.

When Obama considered Garland for a high court vacancy in 2010, Senator Orrin Hatch, a Utah Republican, called the judge "terrific" and said he could be confirmed to the Supreme Court "virtually unanimously."

Please proceed, Senator.
