MSNBC shuffling execs in another bid to fix lousy ratings
By Claire Atkinson
March 15, 2016
NBC News boss Andy Lack is lining up reinforcements to help fix ratings-challenged MSNBC.
Lack has been trying for more than a year to boost the left-leaning MSNBC by returning it to rolling news coverage during the day and fostering a tighter relationship with talent at NBC News.
--------
The latest change follows a string of recent embarrassments for the flailing network, which was already losing ratings ground during this heated election season.
Those include a messy breakup with daytime host Melissa Harris Perry, who walked out on the network over frustration that her weekend show had been repeatedly preempted for election coverage.
That brouhaha was just dying down when MSNBC Hardball host Chris Matthews was taken to task this week for having guests on his show who had recently contributed to his wifes Senate campaign in Maryland. MSNBC dismissed criticism of Matthews and insisted there was no controversy.
--------
While rival news networks are on fire, drawing millions of viewers and mopping up huge advertising dollars, MSNBC is losing primetime eyeballs compared with the number of viewers it had in the 2012 presidential election.
MSNBC is faring better in daytime, with ratings in the target audience up 166 percent last month.
--------
MSNBC is also trying again to woo back the former face of the network, Keith Olbermann, to do political commentary. Olbermann had declined an earlier offer in December to return, in part because of the small salary involved.
They want to get him back to the table again, a source said.

(65,616 posts)However MSNBC gave me some hope of having a progressive-moderate line up that I could watch and agree with. After they sacked Schultz and added insult to injury by hiring Todd...I wrote them off completely.

(65,616 posts)True, but I meant from a tech network to changing their format toward all politics. I think they started up around Clinton's second term as like you said a techie site.

(15,703 posts)The techtv stuff was ahead of its time and I think they sold it off to someone in 98.
Note: The Site, hosted by Soledad O'Brien, was an hour-long TV program devoted to the Internet revolution. It debuted in July 1996 with MSNBC's launch and aired Monday through Saturday, reaching 35 million homes. The Site was a forerunner to an entire technology channel called ZDTV, later renamed TechTV, which merged to become G4.
Dev Null, Soledad's animated barista co-host was voiced by Leo Laporte, who later became an anchor personality on TechTV, hosting multiple shows.
The Site covered technology in all forms, from technical aspects to news and culture. Musical artists Duncan Sheik and Poe were among many musicians interviewed over how technology influenced their music.
