Fire-stunt at Florida school pep rally engulfs man in flames; 8 hospitalized

The hired performer was going in for a slam dunk when the fire breather he leaped over erupted into flames during a pep rally in front of nearly 2,000 students at a Delray Beach high school, officials and witnesses said.

The fire breather's face caught fire and spread to his arms and body as he attempted to tamp out the flames with his hands. Engulfed in a fiery ball, he ran onto the gymnasium floor, which also caught fire, video of the incident showed.

"He panicked, he was swinging his arms, trying to hit it out with his face," said Danny Lahav, 18, a senior at the rally. The performer ripped off his jacket as he tried to put the fire out, Lahav said. "It was getting serious. Everyone kind of started to panic."

The pyrotechnic stunt gone wrong at Atlantic Community High sent the burned performer, Ricky Charles, and seven students with respiratory complaints to the hospital on Thursday, the last day of school before spring break. Another dozen people were treated on scene, fire officials said.
