A proposed Alabama constitutional amendment would legally define a fetus as a person from the moment of fertilization, effectively banning abortion in the state.
The state House Health Committee on Wednesday heard testimony about it, though lawmakers didn't vote on the amendment. Similar proposals in other states have failed to win federal court approval.
Supporters of the bill, sponsored by Republican Rep. Ed Henry, asked the committee to allow Alabama citizens to vote on the issue.
Dr. Jim Belyew, an OB/GYN who spoke in support of the bill, says a baby is a "new person" and is "totally separate" from the mother. The mother "only contributes the egg and the incubator," Belyew said.
Brock Boone, an ACLU lawyer, called the bill an "attack on women."

(24,761 posts)A clever Democrat ought to amend those "personhood" bills to mean only natural persons count as persons in the eyes of the law. This would eliminate the idea that craporations are people.

(24,402 posts)If a "baby" requires an incubator (aka mother/human female) to sustain itself for a period of time, then it's not quite its own person yet JMHO. Nevermind the fact that this proposal flies smacklong into Roe v. Wade but does Alabama also propose to allow women to claim public assistance and other financial benefits for women while the "baby" is still inside of them being incubated? Does the proposal call for a change in the calculation of the "baby's" age? Maybe they will start celebrating "Fertilization Days" instead of birthdays?
