Sen. Ted Cruz unleashed a furious attack on Donald Trump on Thursday after the Republican presidential frontrunner promoted an unflattering photo of Cruz's wife, Heidi Cruz.

Cruz called Trump a "sniveling coward" to a gaggle of reporters.

"It's not easy to tick me off. I don't get angry often, but if you mess with my wife, if you mess with my kids, that will do it every time," he said. "Donald, you're a sniveling coward and leave Heidi the hell alone."

For his part, Cruz said Trump is bringing a "bold, brash voice" and criticized other candidates (not by name) who "go out of their way to smack Donald Trump."

Following the meeting, Cruz said the two had "a delightful conversation."

"I'm a big fan of Donald's, and we talked about the race," Cruz told reporters. "We talked about how we are each enjoying it and how there is a need for more truth tellers."

Asked if Cruz had asked for Trump's endorsement, the Texas senator said, "No, we had a conversation about the race. He's running, I'm running, and we both agreed that we started out as friends, and will end as friends."

Trump earns about 30-40% of republican primary voters. It's a small subset of the electorate and America.

At this point, nothing seems to work to dissuade that subset. Trump knows it. He's called his supporters idiots who would support him no matter what.

I simply don't believe and haven't seen evidence that his schtick will play when the primary ends.
