https://www.yahoo.com/tech/controversial-handgun-design-looks-exactly-smartphone-193557510.htmlA new company from Minnesota that's appropriately enough called Ideal Conceal has created quite a bit of controversy after touting the creation of a handgun designed to look like a smartphone.
"Smartphones are everywhere," the company's website reads, "so your new pistol will easily blend in with todays environment. In its locked position it will be virtually undetectable because it hides in plain sight.
Set for release sometime in mid-2016, the pistol is a double-barreled .380 caliber firearm sporting a one-piece frame construction. The company plans to sell it for $395 and its developer, one Kirk Kjellberg, claims that they've already received upwards of 2,500 emails from interested buyers.
As for the impetus behind the firearm's creation, Kjellberg recently told CNN how he happened across the idea.

(40,207 posts)Now police will shoot even more innocent people thinking that an actual phone is one of these guns. What a sick screwed-up thing to invent.

(5,555 posts)Did a little digging and guns that are made to look it non-gun items are already restricted under the National Firearms Act.
Sounds like it would be subject to a $200 special tax, special registration, and additional background checks
Found this on the ATF website. This thing would fit right in with the other sneak weapon examples at the bottom of the page

(16,199 posts)Because it can only be fired by opening it up into a normal non-concealed pistol shape, it isn't covered like cane or pen guns and it's also exempt because of the rifled barrel.

(423 posts)Saw this earlier on a couple of news outlets, blogs and the response and commentary was nothing short of unfounded
paranoia and outrage.
And if it does happen to be genuine, it doesn't seem like it would be of much use as a sidearm for personal defense.
