CIA photographed detainees naked before sending them to be tortured

Monday 28 March 2016 12.44 BST

The CIA took naked photographs of people it sent to its foreign partners for torture, the Guardian can reveal.
A former US official who had seen some of the photographs described them as “very gruesome”.

The naked imagery of CIA captives raises new questions about the seeming willingness of the US to use what one medical and human rights expert called “sexual humiliation” in its post-9/11 captivity of terrorism suspects. Some human rights campaigners described the act of naked photography on unwilling detainees as a potential war crime.

Unlike video evidence of CIA torture at its undocumented “black site” prisons that were destroyed in 2005 by a senior official, the CIA is said to retain the photographs.

In some of the photos, which remain classified, CIA captives are blindfolded, bound and show visible bruises. Some photographs also show people believed to be CIA officials or contractors alongside the naked detainees.

“Is the naked photography a form of sexual assault? Yes. It’s a form of sexual humiliation,” said Dr Vincent Iacopino, the medical director of Physicians for Human Rights.

Iacopino has not seen the nude photographs but raised grave concerns. “It’s cruel, inhumane and degrading treatment at a minimum and may constitute torture,” he said.

International human rights law, to include the Geneva conventions, forbids photographing prisoners except in extremely limited circumstances related to their detention, to include anything that might compromise their dignity.

still does nor do I believe President Obama knows.

I've already shown that the Pentagon doesn't know either since the CIA and the Pentagon arm opposing sides.

War crimes by the US must be addressed and those responcible must be brought to justice.

NOTICE ... the cia contractors in the story? Well those are out of reach of normal channels because they are
PRIVATE contractors.

He has infected people he arrested for little or no reason with HIV/AIDS, while they were serving short sentences in China... In China, DEATH BY A THOUSAND CUTS is the earliest form of torture ever documented; but under Xi tyranny, perverse, hideous forms of torture were accelerated beyond your worst nightmares.

The awful abuses found in Britain by the elites
of children .......IN THE NEWS RIGHT NOW... but not really covered.

is not just about pedophiles but something much deeper going on. The Reagan and Bush white house scandals on this were real and those kids disappeared is part of this cult.

I don't know about the CIA but I can document everything I talked about.

Unspeakable Evil.

Rep. Mark Foley, (R-FL) chased male pages and led Congress's efforts on behalf of missing and exploited children. A moderate Republican who was in a position to know everybody "helping" children nationwide.

When he was a sweaty gym teacher, Rep. Dennis Hastert, similarly, used his position of authority to sexually assault a child in his school. As Speaker of the House of Representatives, second in line of succession for the Presidency, he paid said former student blackmail.

One particularly awful example is US Assistant Attorney Roy David Atchison, who flew up from Florida to Michigan for what he thought was a sexual encounter with a 5 year old child. He had exchanged emails with a person he thought was the child's mother. In reality, it was a deputy sheriff. The guy tried to commit suicide after his arrest, so he was placed in a cell where they could better watch him and then he committed suicide.

The naked humiliation thing gets some people OFF.
Just like serial killers keep photos and trophies.

Which is why they make tapes and photographs.

in on ahem interrogations. I wonder if they participated? Sounds like something they would get their jollies off. Maybe there are tapes of them doing so? Even if they surfaced, this country would just shrug it off. Like Congress shrugging off the CIA getting caught spying on them....or learning the NSA spies on us all.

I think when it comes to Bush and Cheney, serial killers could only dream of having a full military arsenal at their disposal to murder millions of people in the name of some flag.

I know we both agree on 'the deep state' but now I'm seeing something called 'the others' that are involved

It is depressing that even in 2016 nobody gives a crap. Not a single one of the PTB will go against the grain. SO we waste trillions while 30 million American children go to bed starving for lack of dinner each night and wake up hungry and go to school angry.

Torture. Later, the Spying.

AMY GOODMAN: Well, as a professor at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, you have not stopped looking at the C.I.A., and now you’ve written this new book. It’s called A Question of Torture: C.I.A. Interrogation, from the Cold War to the War on Terror. Give us a history lesson.

ALFRED McCOY: Well, if you look at the most famous of photographs from Abu Ghraib, of the Iraqi standing on the box, arms extended with a hood over his head and the fake electrical wires from his arms, okay? In that photograph you can see the entire 50-year history of C.I.A. torture. It’s very simple. He’s hooded for sensory disorientation, and his arms are extended for self-inflicted pain. And those are the two very simple fundamental C.I.A. techniques, developed at enormous cost.

From 1950 to 1962, the C.I.A. ran a massive research project, a veritable Manhattan Project of the mind, spending over $1 billion a year to crack the code of human consciousness, from both mass persuasion and the use of coercion in individual interrogation. And what they discovered — they tried LSD, they tried mescaline, they tried all kinds of drugs, they tried electroshock, truth serum, sodium pentathol. None of it worked. What worked was very simple behavioral findings, outsourced to our leading universities — Harvard, Princeton, Yale and McGill — and the first breakthrough came at McGill. And it’s in the book. And here, you can see the — this is the — if you want show it, you can. That graphic really shows —- that’s the seminal C.I.A. experiment done in Canada and McGill University -—

AMY GOODMAN: Describe it.

ALFRED McCOY: Oh, it’s very simple. Dr. Donald O. Hebb of McGill University, a brilliant psychologist, had a contract from the Canadian Defense Research Board, which was a partner with the C.I.A. in this research, and he found that he could induce a state of psychosis in an individual within 48 hours. It didn’t take electroshock, truth serum, beating or pain. All he did was had student volunteers sit in a cubicle with goggles, gloves and headphones, earmuffs, so that they were cut off from their senses, and within 48 hours, denied sensory stimulation, they would suffer, first hallucinations, then ultimately breakdown.

And if you look at many of those photographs, what do they show? They show people with bags over their head. If you look at the photographs of the Guantanamo detainees even today, they look exactly like those student volunteers in Dr. Hebb’s original cubicle.

Now, then the second major breakthrough that the C.I.A. had came here in New York City at Cornell University Medical Center, where two eminent neurologists under contract from the C.I.A. studied Soviet K.G.B. torture techniques, and they found that the most effective K.G.B. technique was self-inflicted pain. You simply make somebody stand for a day or two. And as they stand — okay, you’re not beating them, they have no resentment — you tell them, "You’re doing this to yourself. Cooperate with us, and you can sit down." And so, as they stand, what happens is the fluids flow down to the legs, the legs swell, lesions form, they erupt, they suppurate, hallucinations start, the kidneys shut down.

Now, if you look at the other aspect of those photos, you’ll see that they’re short-shackled — okay? — that they’re long-shackled, that they’re made — several of those photos you just showed, one of them with a man with a bag on his arm, his arms are straight in front of him, people are standing with their arms extended, that’s self-inflicted pain. And the combination of those two techniques — sensory disorientation and self-inflicted pain — is the basis of the C.I.A.’s technique.
