Give this some thought. I maxed out at a half-hour in New Haven in '92. Back then, the line out the door in that solid Dem precinct told me for sure that Bush 41 was going down.
These days, I'm not so sure. The hours-long lines we've been seeing from Cleveland in '04 to Milwaukee tonight strike me as just another form of Jim Crow vote suppression.
And today, in a primary in largely vote-by-mail California? All to myself.

(27,310 posts)Yep. And I love going to the polls and seeing my fellow citizens engaging in the political process. No absentee for me, ever.

(135,425 posts)permit it. If not, we should be motivated to get up at the asscrack of dawn to be there when they open the doors.
We all know which areas are difficult, they aren't going to be easier this time around.
I am lucky--I never have had to wait to vote. I've either voted absentee when I lived abroad (most of the time) or, when I vote in person, I live in a small enough burg that I never have to wait.

(24,331 posts)Budget propositions? You've got 10 minutes of my time. President? Close congressional race? Don't worry about me, I've got a tent.

(78,249 posts)come to think of it, neither do races like these -- in comfortable white suburban and small-town precincts.

(2,307 posts)it would depend on the election. If I felt my voice would make a difference then as long as needed. Being that I live in Alabama where Republicans always win by double digits I don't know.

(78,249 posts)but only in urban areas like Birmingham and Mobile. Statewide? "I fell your pain!"

(2,307 posts)I have yet to miss any election except for one city election. Every primary, every general election I have voted. I live in a strong Republican house district and a strong Republican state district. So far I have help elect two governors James and Siegelman other than that not one senate or house vote, national or state, that I have voted for has won. And, although we have had Democratic presidents my states electoral votes went to Republicans.
So voting for me is very frustrating, but I still do.
The OP spoke of how long one would wait in line. Because of where I live, a crowded polling place might take 15 minutes to go through the line. Usually it takes 5 minutes. There simply are not enough people assigned to the polling place for it to get crowded.

Is there any way you could live-blog this??

(25,592 posts)And if it were when the polls first opened or in the evening.
If in the morning, I could come back later.
None of this is covered in the OP

(78,249 posts)just as there were in Cleveland in '04 -- when Ohio threw the (s)election to Bush**.

(13,776 posts)(And since I live in Oregon, where we vote by mail on countable paper ballots and the angels sing in thanksgiving, I don't have to wait in line at all, which is precisely as it should be.) But voting doesn't work that way. So many working people can't take time out of their day. Which I'm sure doesn't affect Democratic candidates one bit.
