Many Didn't Think Recall was Legitimate

First Read: "Maybe the most important numbers in the exit poll from last night: Just 27% said recall elections are appropriate for any reason (and Barrett won those folks, 90%-9%). By comparison, 60% said that recalls are legitimate only for official misconduct (and Walker won them, 68%-31%), while another 10% said recalls are never appropriate (and Walker won here, 94%-5%). Bottom line: Walker benefited greatly from the fact that many Wisconsin voters didn't think the premise of last night's recall was legitimate."

1. That alone probably drove home the stake.

Not just in terms of the people who voted, but those who stayed home because they didn't approve of a recall, even if they didn't like Walker.

3. Wasn't that the message pounded home by the GOP ads?

That recalls are somehow undemocratic. Grey Davis wasn't accused of any official misconduct, it was money that bought that recall. I think it is the huge discrepancy in spending. Dana ; )

We had the same thing with our mayor a couple years ago, except the parties were flipped. I felt that way then and I feel that way now. Elections have consequences people. Get off your asses or reap what you sow.

6. This is maybe the biggest factor, right here...

now the question is: was that view - that recalls aren't legitimate - influenced by huge media buys on the Republican side?

Was that message part of the Republican advertising strategy?

Thanks for posting.

Edit: didn't see same question asked up thread.

Walker and crew even tried to change the law to say, recalls had to be only for criminally charged persons. I know of at least 3 newspapers that endorsed Walker just for that reason...not because they backed him, but because they didn't endorse recalls. And my local paper endorsed Walker for that reason, but floated the idea of replacing Klaefisch with Mitchell to force repubs and Dems to work together.

9. That probably explains the exit polling that showed many Obama voters voting for Walker...
