Tenn. governor rejects Bible as official state book, but veto override looms

The official rock of Tennessee is limestone. The raccoon is the state's official wild animal.

But the state still does not have an official book.

Republican Gov. Bill Haslam last week vetoed a bill that would have added the Bible to Tennessee's list of official state symbols, but lawmakers have already threatened to override his decision.

In Haslam's veto message to the Republican lawmakers who sponsored the bill, he wrote in defense of Christian beliefs: "I strongly disagree with those who are trying to drive religion out of the public square."

2. Good grief, what ever happened to 'separation of church and state'?

Good for the Governor for vetoing this. Anyone can be supportive of their church. To foist the bible as a representative book for the whole state goes beyond logic.

3. Yeah, there's nothing like grandstanding for old time religion

to make sure the legislature never does its actual job.

You'd think people would get wise to that and vote every one of those scumbags out in November, but it never happens.

Just another back pocket issue that is revived.

6. Since it's entirely symbolic with no substantive effects,

How could one have standing to challenge this in court? Just being a generally offended citizen usually isn't enough.

8. What the Bible says about Non-Christians

They are without God.

"Whosoever ... abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God." -- 2 John 9

They are all antichrists.

"For many deceivers are entered into the world, who confess not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh. This is a deceiver and an antichrist." -- 2 John 7

They should be shunned. Neither marry nor be friends with them.

"Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness? And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel? ... Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord." -- 2 Cor.6:14-17

They should be killed.

"If thy brother, the son of thy mother, or thy son, or thy daughter, or the wife of thy bosom, or thy friend, which is as thine own soul, entice thee secretly, saying, Let us go and serve other gods, which thou hast not known, thou, nor thy fathers; Namely, of the gods of the people which are round about you ... Thou shalt not consent unto him, nor hearken unto him; neither shall thine eye pity him, neither shalt thou spare, neither shalt thou conceal him: But thou shalt surely kill him; thine hand shall be first upon him to put him to death, and afterwards the hand of all the people. And thou shalt stone him with stones, that he die." -- Dt.13:6-10

7. Make "Infinite Jest" the official state book, and then require that all legislators read it in full.

That'll keep them busy for a while.
