Not that there was anything wrong about President Carters family.
But more that the Obama family has shown incredible grace in a much uglier environment. While Presidents Carter family had to put up with a lot, they didn't have to put up with he's not an american crap. |

yet I can NEVER remember, I'm late 60's in age, when the vacation of Amy, Chelsea or those two wild bush daughters vacation spots were revealed as they were with Michelle and her two daughters by the republicans. That was mean and dangerous. Every time something unprecedented happened to the first AA POTUS, it was noted. Long list of racially motivated misdeeds and outright traitorous behavior toward the man and his wonderful family.

Just because I don't agree with every single thing that Obama, Michelle and the girls do doesn't mean they aren't great. Hell, I don't even agree with everything my spouse has done over the last eight days, let alone years (and I can't imagine being married to anyone else). You don't like Obama? This was a disaster for her as the daughter of a President with the secret service guarding her. I think she felt out of place and was probably taunted. She said years later how unhappy she was. Carter wanted to look like an everyday ordinary citizen at the cost of his daughters happiness.

In my lifetime, FDR and LBJ were the two presidents who accomplished the most for the people, but I wouldn't hold either of them up as a role model for my kids. Jimmy Carter was a nice family man, but very limited in terms of his presidential achievements. First families since 1980 have pretty much sucked until the Obamas.

34. I think you can make a strong case for either...
...the Obamas or the Carters. President Carter's character and innate goodness has been on display for decades.
He went out and helped build houses for low-income families with his own hands. A former President could easily be excused for sending a cheque instead. There is nothing I could add that would make more of a case for the character of the current President. I'm certainly not demeaning either...at least, I hope I'm not. And, on an anecdotal level, a little parallel that involved my wife some years ago. She worked for many years at Boys and Girls Club and rose to direct a flagship club in Florida. A surprising number of celebrities had been Club Kids in their youth and were always ready to give back - lending their presence and fame to raise funds and awareness. Denzel was at the top of that list, but that's not what this story is about. My wife worked hard all day, which was normal for these events, and had a nice day with two volunteers that she didn't know. At the end of the day, she said "I should have introduced myself much sooner, but thank you for your hard work." The couple turned out to be du Ponts. Yes, those du Ponts, but I'm not sure which ones. Softened my opinion of them, for sure. At the other end of the scale, and something I hope gives some people a little smirk...one of the celebs she once worked with turned out to be as big an asshole in person as you might expect from his public persona - Bill O'Reilly. |

55. It didn't hurt that Steve was an excellent babe.
Of course, it's wrong to think that, but you be the judge:

54. While I have been disappointed in Obama on several issues,...
...I do commend he and his family for their display of dignity and class under difficult circumstances. I do not regret my two votes and support for him.

59. What you said. Exactly....
We don't elect perfect people... hell, there aren't any perfect people.. but Pres Obama has served well under horrible conditions. Michelle and the kids have been real role models.
I believe history will be kind to him. |

60. I agree
Given the apparent options for November, I'd really rather find a really fast way to throw out the 22nd amendment.

Jimmy Carter was the first president I campaigned for. I still have a little tiny gold peanut lapel pin

It will only be getting louder as this admin comes to a close. There's a lot of people here that are going to miss this family. Myself included.

68. A very nice OP ...
... and yet some still found the need to shit on Obama when responding.
Sad. But I'm with you ... I have two daughters who are almost exactly the same ages as their girls. And its been awesome watching his daughters, and my daughters grow up. |

70. Me too.
![]() I really REALLY don't want him to go! "We won't see his like..." Sigh.... :'( but, if I were to try and look at it from a higher perspective, I would say the most important thing is to take his example as you would look to anyone you deeply admire, and try to live up to it. Or at least to some of it. I can imagine President Obama himself giving that advice. |

He and Jimmie Carter are two of the nicest men to live in the white house.

79. It all feels kind of unfair, like Obama is really starting to hit his stride.
I would keep him for another 8 years if I could. There probably won't be another Barack Obama for a generation or more.

80. nice enough people
too bad President Obama made most of the Bush tax cuts permanent.
But I guess crappy policy is okay if one smiles and is polite about it (and nobody in your own party bothers to call out the bullsh*t, like they pretended to care about inequality when Bush was President) Tax cuts for the rich? IOKIYAD |
